Watch Maisky
Play Dvorak
Go to this link and watch him play the first movement of the
Dvorak. He does some interesting fingerings on the string crossing
section. http://www.onlineclassics.net/orchestral/index.html?main.html&2

For those of you with slow connections you may be able to hear more
than you can see.

Dvorak
That really is a great site. This was a really interesting thisng
for me to watch today as I've spent most of the morning practicing
the Dvorak first movement - thats my usual Saturday morning
pastime! You are right - he does some unusual things. I cant
quite make out what he is doing in the 2 string crossing sections in
the first movement. I dont think I've ever seen that done that way
before....but it works! Also a great close up shot of the ascending
double stop scale...if only I could do that! He also does something
very different at the very end of the first movement. An impressive
performance. Thanks for that link Keith

Re: Watch Maisky
Play Dvorak
Last summer I saw him (and heard, of course) playing a Bach
solo-recital. For Suite No.1 he put on a blue shirt, for No.3 he
changed it into a silver one. After intermission, playing No. 5, he
reappeared in all black. I wonder if this is another kind of
interpreting a piece, for example blue/silver for a major key, black
for a minor one (and here it`s even c-minor... supposed to be the
most tragic key. Think of Beethoven`s 5th or Brahms` 1st.)

I've heard that he designs his own shirts, and changes them
frequently in concerts because he sweats a ton.

Re: "2 string crossing sections in the first movement"
If
you are referring to the two famous sextuplet sections, I believe he
is playing what was originally written by Dvorak, before Hanus Wihan
got his virtuosic hands on the piece, turning sixteenth notes on one
string into sextuplets across three strings.

Dvorak
Yes - that appears to be what he is doing. In the first section you
can't actually see the fingerwork as the camera angle is not good,
but you can clearly see him using the one string in the second
sextuplet set. I did not realise that was what Dvorak actually wrote
as most editions have the three string crossings marked (I
think). Keith

Misha Maisky's
shirt
When I saw him play two Dvorak concertos with Orpheus he wore blue
velvet leggings with a lace shirt for the first solo and then
returned in a wild, black suit for the second. The best word to
describe the suit was "wavey" - deep, michelin-man type textured
material throughout the pants and short, bolero jacket. Underneath
was a ruffled shirt. His answer to the the audience's surprise was
to shrug and exclaim, "Fashion!"
A few years later I saw him,
again with Orpheus, but much more boring in a simple blue, satin
shirt with black pants. Oh well.

valery
gergiev
This is a really good website, the rococo variations are also
really good.
Anyway, did any of you watch the clips with
valery gergiev conducting (prokofieff, stravinsky)? I wonder if the
way he shakes his hands all the time makes it easier for the
orchestra to follow him. None of you has ever played with him in
person, have you?
