Rose is
God
Just got my copy of the new Rose album from the U. of MD. I own
most of the recordings in LP, and had heard the others more than
once. But hearing them again in good, clean transfers from the
original tapes is stupefying; where did he develop such a unique
sense of phrasing? How could he squeeze so much music out of that
hybrid piece of crap that started out as a sonata by Sammartini? How
could he nail ALL those resplendent slides, like the one that ends
the Grieg? The later Schumann recording was mannered, and the tone
wasn't as golden, but it's still a sovereign artist at work. I feel
more fortunate than ever that I got a little piece of him when he
was still alive. Folks, if you love the cello, this CD is
indispensable.

Re: Rose is

Perhaps I sould start a new thread for this....
but....nah.
this is a question to all of the "older"
(SORRY... I had to) cellists on the board..... those of you who saw
people like Rose and piatigorsky in concert. I have enjoyed the few
recordings that I could get of these cellists immensely. I am just
wondering what it was like to go see one of these guys as compared
to going to see Yo-yo or Slava today. Do any of the current players
even come close in your oppinions?....... Not too well stated, but I
ope you get the idea.... I'm just looking for a bit of perspective,
as I never had the chance to see any of them. (I started cello the
same year that Rose died!....)

My Rose hasn't arrived yet. I am anxiously awaiting it. I just
wanted to say how good it is to see you [Bob] on the Board once
again!!! Try to stop in more frequently, OK? E

Re: Rose is God
(to Bob)
I ditto Ellen's comment, but, gee, Bob, does every piece of music
have to be a pure-bred with you? Your attitudes about Haydn D are
well known. Now, you trash the Sammartini as a hybrid "piece of
crap". I've adored and performed the Sammartini (a deceptively
tricky piece to perform WELL, IMHO) for years and I'd hardly call it
a "piece of crap".
I just played the new "scholarly" edition
of the Schubert 9. Without the "improvements" made by Mendelssohn,
Schumann, and Mahler, that piece, tho never will it be "a piece of
crap", was weakened slightly, IMHO. In other words, the "hybrid" is
better (IMHO).
It IS good to see you back on the board, Bob,
but you and I will just have to agree to disagree about the
Sammartini and other such "hybrids".
(PS, I'll be FINALLY in
touch soon about the Schelomo) Regards, Gary

Re: Rose is

I'm sure the info is somewhere here, but how do I get my hands on
that CD. L.R. is my daughter's cello God. She constantly listens to
the CDs she has of him playing. (Her teacher was a Rose student.)
Harrell, on the web site a while ago that had video clips of an
interview, said something to the effect that no one had a better
sound than Rose, not even Rostropovich. (I hope memory didn't
distort that comment too much.) I certainly have to agree. Anyway,
how do I get that CD?

Astonishing!
My CD arrived yesterday and I had to sit right down and listen. I'd
never heard Rose until yesterday. Now everyone else pales in
comparison.
The Arpeggione took my breath away. Stunning!
And to think it was recorded on one take!!!
The Franck left
me in tears it was so ravishing.
If there's anyone reading
this post who has not yet ordered this, DO SO!. . . you'll never
regret it.
Thanks for letting us all know about this, Bob.

Re:

I suppose the one-take info on the Arpeggione comes from the liner
notes?!?! If not, then to correct what I know...Rose commented to my
dad at a lesson once that he'd recorded the last MOVEMENT of the
Schubert in one take (it came up when Rose commented he'd met
Starker on the street and the Hungarian commented that the Kodaly
recording (not sure which one that would have been)had taken some 12
hours, so understandably Rose was puzzled by the Why so long?
thought. But anyone with any doubts as to the security in Rose's
chops needs to get ahold of the live recording of Alan Shulman's
concerto premiere with the NY Phil in 1950...scary, amazing
playing. Having grown up with Rose's limpid left hand in my inner
ear, all I can say (with respect to Dubya)is that it's the best
sublimmminable cello advertising campaign ever.

The link to CD page is correct, but for some reason it will not
work. Go to the main page and then click on the Rose CD story and
then on the buy the CD link. The main page is:

Awesome
I received my cd today. Wow, Rose's playing surpasses anything else
that I've heard from him. My thanks to those who made this cd
possible.

Re: Astonishing!
(to Justin)
In his interview on the CD, Hambro reports that the "Arpeggione"
was recorded in one take. A truly amazing set of CDs, beautifully
transfered. Perhaps the most outstanding historical re-issue so far
this millenium!!

I will snap up
my copy too
I will be attending some of the American Cello Congress as best I
can and will definitely pick up my own copy. To hear all of you
speak in such superlatives would indicate that I must really snap up
the CD the minute I walk in to the center! Bob, one of the events I
plan on attending will be your presentation. I enjoyed what you did
at the WCCIII last year and don't want to miss out on another good
experience. Maybe you won't be interrupted this time by the search
for the Massed Cello Ensemble performers! Refresh my memory- that
WAS you that got interrupted, correct? In any case, I look forward
to it. See you there, I hope!

BA respectfully
defers...!
Someday- with some more computer literate person's help- I will get
up a web site that really goes into deep technical and musical
analysis, with audio clips for side by side comparisons and written
discussion. Once people hear what to listen for it becomes quite
clear- but I have learned the hard way that statements of ideas I
have discovered from my own study are treated merely as reactionary
opinion.
The differences- like the differences between good
artwork and bad-are subtle and requres a great deal of exposure and
teaching to appreciate. Personal taste is definitely ultimately
involved- that's what makes our own artistry unique and makes some
artists speak to us more than others. But it is not an excuse to
shut our ears and follow whoever has the best publicist.
Anyway, I've learned that you can't just tell someone that a
velvet Elvis painting doesn't have the same artistic merit as a
Monet. Particularly today in America where fame is more important
than substance and where we seem to have abandoned the quest for
excellence in the name of plurality.
And more to the point I
have a huge recital Friday and then Beethoven triple the next week,
so I really should be practicing! Cheers- B
