Rose is good
(very good!)
Hmmm....didn't mean to start a new thread, per se, but...
I
just received my Leonard Rose Remembered CD and I really love his
Schubert, (more than Slava's). Now, I wonder how people will compare
this performance to Feuermann's?
As much as I love his
Schubert, I think my favorite on this CD set is his Franck. There's
something so refined about his playing and fluid bowing that just
puts Rose among the greatest cellists who have ever lived.

The Feuermann Schubert is an amazing recording. However, I prefer
the Rose because it is more spiritually performed as opposed to
Feuermann's virtuosic toss-off of the piece.

I sent off for mine yesterday, now I just have to wait to get it
in. How long did it take to get yours, Paul? (or Gary, or Janet,
etc...)

Re: Rose is
good. An understatement!!!
I just got my Rose CD, and I've listened to the the first disc, the
Boccherini Sonata, Schubert Arpeggione, and Franck Sonata. I've
heard all of these before. I've got tapes of them all. I have to
say, it was like I was on drugs after listening to this CD. It is
absolutely stunning.

Rose
remembered
I was fortunate enough to hear some of this CD in the car with
David Sanders last night, and it is simply stunning. David and I
both commented that as good as the sound on the disc is, it must
have been incredible live. I only heard Rose perform twice towards
the end of his career, but even then his elegance was very much in
evidence. Jon Pegis

Re: Rose
remembered
The sound system in my car is atrocious, and even there the 4th
movement of the Franck (my personal favorite) is just gorgeous. I
was a little worried after you guys raved about this disk that I
would be majorly disappointed. It has been an awfully big buildup,
you know. While I can't say I am fond of all the works on the CDs --
not faulting the playing, just personal taste in repertoire -- this
is the sound that lures many people to the cello in the first place.
Simply one of the sweetest. Thanks for the recommendation.

I've always been a big Rose fan also. When I was in Richmond
Symphony he played Dvorak Concerto and it was awesome. Also heard
him at Aspen play with Cleveland Quartet and the quartet was very
good, but his playing just seemed huge next to them - sort of larger
than life.

Sarah - when were you in Richmond? I was there 79-84, and Rose came
there once, and played Schumannn, and didn't live long afterwards. I
played a masterclass with him then - very interesting experience.

So
Ellen....
Out of curiosity, what is your personal taste in repertoire? What
are your favorite pieces, and what styles are they (i.e. Romantic
style, atonal, more technical pieces, etc..)? Since you said that
the repertoire on the Rose CD isn't your personal taste, I'm
wondering if they are mine, or if our tastes are opposite, or what.
I enjoy learning these types of things about people. I don't know
why. Just the other day I met someone who adores Baroque music and
hates the Romantic period. He even said (quote) "Then Beethoven came
along and destroyed music." I couldn't disagree with him more, my
tastes being more in the Romantic period, and, yes, even in some of
the atonal pieces. Maybe I'm just too curious.

Re: So
Ellen....
I don't mean to give the wrong impression about the Rose CD. The
truth of the matter is I don't have the personal familiarity with
these pieces, meaning I've not played them as a student. I think
that lack of history with the music colors my feeling. I react very
emotionally to music. The "Arpeggione" is special to me not only for
the sheer beauty of the piece, but for the people connections I have
because of it. The Boccherini and the Grieg Sonatas are not personal
favorites. Then again, I don't like Krispey Kreme donuts either! Too
sweet. So don't let my opinion affect yours. There is a Chopin piece
on here, and I know you're fond of his work.
In general I
like romantic music, not atonal. Geez, a bunch of cello chatters
could answer this question about me. We've been though this before.
Dvorak and Schumann piano quintets. Special movements of Brahms'
Sextet. Mendelssohn Octet. Dvorak Trio F minor, second mvt in
particular. Not much Shostakovich. Orchestral, more Beethoven, less
Mahler. Some Strauss. Saint Saens' Bacchanale. LVB Piano Concerto
No. 4. Come to think of it, I like a lot with piano. Beethoven
Triple. Aaron, this is in the middle of a ROSE POST!!! It's a huge
list. You just won't find Schoenberg on it, Rihm, those guys. Not
much Wagner, but some Puccini. Now you've done it. I can't stop
thinking of about a thousand movements of things I like and don't
like, and why. Grrrrr......

Steve - Richmond
Symphony
I played there late 60's - early 70s, off-hand don't remember
exactly. My father was the founding conductor of the orchestra and I
left when he did. What did you play for Rose?

Re: Steve -
Richmond Symphony
It was an odd mixed up master class - 2 undergrads, and then me, a
grad student and working professional. I played the Bach 3rd suite
prelude, and all he said was "very nice". and then proceeded to play
the whole thing himself. Amazing - I got to hear him playing the
amati, a perfect rendition of the piece, and all from about 10 feet
away!
