not banned
but...
You must realize that music has evolved and developed. There was a
time when the very concept of a sharp or a flat, or a twelve tone
scale was just not thought of. However, there were certain times in
which the Roman Catholic Church laid down strict guidelines as to
what was and was not acceptable musical style for use in the Church.

Re: not banned

Several years ago, while channel flipping, I came across a TV
preacher who ranted that, Bibically speaking, all music, except that
which is made by the human voice, should be banned from the church.
All instruments, including the organ, were completely sacreligious.
As one who has offered cello music in church for nearly 40 years,
I'm still trying to recover from that guy!!

instrumental=sacrilegious?
Biblically speaking, this guy hasn't got a clue! There is no
biblical basis for such a view.
Throughout the Bible (the
book of Psalms especially) there is mention of using all kinds of
instruments for praising God.
Lyres, Tambourines, Trumpets,
etc.
This preacher is more likely the one who is
sacrilegious!
Gary, it just goes to show that one needs to
know the Bible really well so as not to be affected by clowns like
this guy who obviously doesn't.

re: banned
interval
The banned interval was the tritone, any tritone not just certain
notes.
That would be, for example, B-natural (not Bb) and
F-natural. The tritone, of course became the lynchpin of modern
dominant harmony. It was banned in the "middle ages" because the
stridency of the dissonance was thought to take away from the
meditative experience of prayer.
Accordingly, perfect
intervals were: unison,octave,perfect-fifth, and
perfect-fourth.
Imperfect intervals were:
major-third,minor-third,major-sixth,minor-sixth.
You can see
how this would limit the counterpoint. Gradually, all external notes
sounding simultaneously with one in the former list were allowed "as
long as they resolved" to a note on the list.

A whole movement
of tritone...
Last spring the Utah Symphony (and chorus ) did
Benjamin Britten's War Requiem. I confess, it was extremely
difficult music, and not 'easy on the ears' at first (or even second
or third) hearing. The opening movement is nothing but tritone: C to
F#. Britten's intentions to create a feeling of unrest are
marvelously captured by his continual use of this
interval.
It took us 6 months to learn this puppy, but with
intensive study of both music and the motives behind the
composition, I grew to love it. In fact, by performance time, I
loved it so much that it was quite an emotional experience to
perform it, nay, even life-changing.
Tritone has it's place.
It can make powerful statements in music.
