Duos
I'm going to do a concert this fall, playing cello duos with my
teacher. I realized
that I don't know anything about the duo repertoire...! What's good
to play? We were thinking of playing one duo by Carlo Graziani (Sp?)
but we don't have anything else... Any suggestions?

Re: Duos
One of my favorites is the Five Duos by Halsey Stevens. H.S. was an
authority on the music of Bartok, and the 5 Duos evoke a Hungarian
flavor in both harmony and rhythm. They aren't particularly
difficult, but they are fun to play and very effective. The two
slower movements have some exquisite harmonies, particularly the
dissonances and resolutions.Very equal part distribution between the
two players.
Two other works, both considerably more
difficult, are the Gian Carlo Menoti Suite for two cellos/piano, and
a concerto for two cellos and orchestra by David Ott, which was
commissioned by the National Symphony (Washington, DC) and premiered
by two of the orchestra's fine section players. It was performed
with the composer at the piano and the same two cellists at the
first World Cello Congress at U of Maryland in 1988, and it brought
the house down. Great work, again with very equal writing for both
parts. Recordings are available for both works. If you are
interested, I can find particulars for both recordings and
publishers downstairs in my music studio.

Hey Ryan, are there any CD's currently available of the Ott double
concerto? How might I go about obtaining one? Thanks! Danny P.

Re: ott
recording
The Ott Concerto for 2 Cellos is published by: MMB, 10370 Page
Industrial Boulevard, St. Louis, Missouri, 63132. The recording I
have is with Wolfgang and Daniel Laufer, with Zdenek Macal and the
Milwaukee Symphony, on Koss Classics, KC-1023.
Menotti Suite
is published by G. Schirmer, and it has been recorded on a recording
entitled Homage to Piatigorsky, with Denin Brott, cello, Samuel
Sanders, piano, and Evan Drachman (Piatigorsky's grandson) playing
second cello on the Menotti. Mastersound CD: DFCDI-013
Halsey
Stevens Duos is a Peters Publication. I am unaware of any
recordings, unfortunately.

Duos
The Caprices by Servais are duos. A. Bylsma has recorded several
for Harmonia Mundi, "Servais Souvenirs & Caprices."

Re: Duos
A couple of others that are favorites of mine are the Klengel Suite
and the Bernard Heiden Inventions. The Mozart Sonata for bassoon and
cello works well as a cello duet, as does most any sonata for cello
and basso continuo (such as the Graziani.

Re: Duos
Don't forget to take a look at the Offenbach duos !
Well, i
know, Offenbach is not often seen as a "serious" composer due to
the huge amount of "light music" he wrote, but according to my
opinion he was a really great musician ! (and he was a cellist,
too)
At least a dozen cello duets by Offenbach
exist, numbered from series A to F, with 2 or 3 duets in each
series. They have increasing difficulty (easiest is A), hence you
can always find one which fits to your level. And IMHO everyone
of them is beautiful.
Happy playing, ;-)
