Update on
"busking in the tube"
Here's the latest photos and story of J.L. Webber busking in the
tube. Good publicity for cellists everywhere, I would say!

What nice shiney floors and walls. Doesn't look like an altogether
bad place to play--a far cry from the NYC subway. Although some have
done it, I don't think there will be a rush to play in the subway
here anytime soon. On the other hand--5th Ave. has some great spots.
There's a nice alcove in a building across from Stueben Glass that
works as stage...Groups used to get lots of attention from tourists
on 5th Ave. Does anyone still play around there during the summer?

Love that JLW quote "The last thing that you want if you have got a
headache or a hangover is someone who cannot play." That gave me a
real giggle.

I wonder what cello he was using, it looks like his Guadagnini. I
hope it wasn't his strad. That'd be a mistake IMHO. Actually i
wouldn't bring either instrument into the subway. eek.

The sickening thing is, if you were to be mugged for your $xx
thousand cello at a subway, the nut would probably try to pawn it at
a guitar store or pawn shop for $100 and a pack of cigarettes.

I played in the
subway - and met my band!
My friend and I played boroque cello duets in the NY subway a lot
last summer and in the fall. We played mostly in Times Square, near
the N/R train and made good money. But it was so much fun we usually
didn't care. Even the policemen liked us!
BONUS: We met a
singer/songwriter and joined his band!
