Bruch, Op.
46
I wonder if there's any transcriptions of Bruch's "Scottish
Fantasy for violin and orchestra", Op. 46 for cello and piano out
there...?

I don't know about any cello arrangments of the Scottish Fantasy
but I wondered if you had tried some of the other pieces he wrote
for the cello. Bruch wrote four concerto pieces for cello of which
Kol Nidrei is the most popular(although in my opinion the Ave Maria
is the most beautiful). The Adagio on Celtic melodies is vaguely
similar to the Scottish Fantasy.

Well, I played Kol Nidrei in recital the day before yesterday,
it's a great piece! I had no idea there was a Adagio on Celtic
melodies...wow... Do you know
what Op. it is? Is it for cello and orchestra?

Celtic
Adagio
Hi Stefan, the Adagio on Celtic Melodies for cello and orchestra is
Op.56. I've got the N.Simrock edition. I think it's about grade 8
level (about as hard as Kol Nidrei). You should also try Ave Maria
Op.61, it's harder than the others but stunningly beautiful.

Ave Maria
How do they sound with piano? I guess that the Ave Maria is also
for cello and orchestra, right? How hard are the pianoparts? About
the same as Kol Nidrei?

Re: Ave
Maria
I've never heard either of the pieces with piano. The piano parts
both look pretty hard although I can't say I've attempted them; I
expect they probably are about the same level as Kol Nidrei. You
should probably listen to them before you order the music, the Ave
Maria is more stormy than Kol Nidrei (although I think it's more
satisfying to play) and the Celtic Adagio isn't really in the same
league. Han-Na Chang has recorded the Ave Maria on her latest CD
"The Swan" which also includes Respighi's Adagio con Variazioni my
all time favourite. Have you played this piece?

Respighi's
Adagio con Variazioni
I can't say I'm a very big fan of the piece, I do have a recording
of it and I have the music somewhere at home, but I haven't played
it yet. I must say that I haven't listened to it that much either,
and hey - I didn't like Kol Nidrei in the beginning...

Re: Respighi's

I have a recording of Slava playing it with Orchestra. It sounds
great on piano. The first recording I heard of it was by Rama
Jucker.

Favourites
Hi Stefan, I can't believe you don't like the Respighi, you
probably won't like the Ave Maria either. What are your
favourites? Hi Paul, I havn't heard it with piano or recorded by
any artists other than Chang. Do you perform the Respighi or the Ave
Maria? I've never heard of Rama Jucker is he around now? Also, I
wondered if you could help me out (I put this in another post but no
one answered) I recently read in a music magazine that Dvorak
disliked the cello's higher and lower registers; is this true?
