Recordings of
Brahms Pno.Concerto #2
Any recommendations? I want to hear the best recording of that
exquisite cello solo!

One of my favorites is the Cleveland Orchestra/Szell, with Leon
Fleischer (sp?), with Jules Eskin (for many years now the Principal
Cellist of the Boston Symphony) doing the solo honors. Absolutely
gorgeous! Available on a double set from Sony/Columbia of both
Brahms concertos plus additional piano material.

To the two excellent ones already mentioned, I would add that two
of our most celebrated solo artists have recorded the concerto as
well: Harrell is playing on the Serkin/Szell recording (available on
a budget Sony CD), and Starker does gloriously it on the
Gilels/Reiner recording (RCA; unfortunately out of print). The
Slidemaster might know if there's any Rose version.

There IS a Rose performance of this solo that was issued on CD. I
don't know if it is still available tho, and it's on a rather
obscure label. AS Disc 415 has a 'live' performance with the NY Phil
conducted by Bruno Walter that features Myra Hess as pianist from
March 22, 1951. This is the best, most beautiful version of this
cello solo I've ever heard!!
