New young
cellist...
Is anyone familiar with Alisa Weilerstein, the 18 year old that has
a new cd?

She played here in Denver last January, but I couldn't go
unfortunately. I heard part of the broadcast later on though and she
sounded very nice.

Re: New young

I have the CD, but I haven't had the time to give it a serious
listen. Am I correct that she just received an Avery Fischer career
grant? That's a pretty big deal. I believe she is from Cleveland and
plays in a piano trio with her parents (among other things). If I'm
not mistaken, her father teaches at CIM. She has gotten a lot of
good reviews. I think she played a concerto with the New York
Chamber Symphony last year (or maybe it was earlier this year). Is
she an up and coming or just a young "temp" on the scene? I've
wondered what cellists are thinking. Has anyone heard her?

I saw Alisa Weilerstein's Wigmore Hall debut last November and
thought that she was amazing. I have only seen a few cellists in
concert (Rostropovich, Wallfish), but hers was the performance that
I most enjoyed.

Yup, ALisa is from Cleveland and plays with her parents in a trio,
and both are on faculty at CIM. I think Alisa is probably considered
an up and coming cellist, I remember seein her in Cleveland withthe
Cleveland Orchestra like 5 years ago playing the Rococo Variations,
s she's definitely not a new face...
