Bridge and string height
I bought a cello back in December finally. I have been playing it almost everyday since then and started to notice small things about myt cello that i dont like. It has a great sount and looks fine and all, but it extreamly hard to play. I have been playing a lot of thumb in third position and it is almost impossible for even my teacher to play some of my music on my cello. What im asking is if your bridge can be lowered or something and if so are there any affects. My teacher said the brightness of my cello may be dampened by this (i personally hate how bright my a and d are. theyre the soloist hard larsens) Is this true?
she also said she thinks it may be that the nut is to high not the bridge because its mach easier to play up high and the strings arent as tall mear the bridge as they are near the peg box. Any help is welcome I can go downtown this weekend if i need to so i hope to get some quick replies. thanks

Well Mr.f65q45a6p87p6f4rh6sa4f54afa465465a46f5a456f4ha56f4, that's quite the name your have there. Hope I spelled it correctly! As for your question: any good luthier should be able to adjust the action on your cello by working on the bridge and/or nut, and it shouldn't change the sound much. But it needs to be seen to be evaluated.

The cello on ebay????
I hope your not accusing me of buying the 150 dollar cello with the bridge at the bottom of the f holes. I bought a 5600 german from a local shop here in houston.

Re: Bridge and string height
well......

if you spent ~$6k on your cello there is absolutely no excuse fo it having major set up problems. Was this a string shop, or more of a general music store? If it was a string shop, take it back there and tell then what the problem is.... they should be able to fix it. If it was a general music store.... find a string shop and have them take care of it.

On a side note..... why did you buy a cello on which you hate the sound of two of the strings?

I dont hate my a and d. I made it sound wrong. Theyre larsen (hard) And theyre really bright. In a fast lively *bright* piece they sound great but in a slow pretty piece they are to bright. My d isnt nearly as bad as my a. My techer said i should get the medium larsens when i change my strings.

Wrong shop? Wrong strings?
Why in the world would an knowlegeable shop sell a cello that was not properly set up. If you have trouble getting them to properly check out AND adjust the instrument, it would be time to seek out a shop that employs Professionals.

Some instruments hAve trouble responding to a light bow touch if the bridge is too high because there is not quite enough "play" in the instrument top. To much of the static force of the strings is downward.

Violinists search to find the ideal mix of strings - it's relatively cheap for them (since they can buy a good set of synthetic-core strings for $20 to $45 (inclusive of the very best). For cellists, even at discount, it typically costs three times more - just as the instrument does in the first place.

The first place we seek string advice is from friends. But a really good luthier (or a good player who has experienced many instruments) should be able to diagnose your sound, and based on the way you have the insturment strung, suggest how to achieve your tonal goal.

I have one cello that is too bright (by far) for Larsen Soloist A & D strings - and even for Spirocore tungsten (G & C). It does OK with Spirocore silvers, and Larsen medium A & D, but the top is also pretty good with Belcanto Gold (Which work for the G & C too). I have found these Belcanto Golds satisfying to me for a range of "basic" cello voices, ranging from mellow to very bright and strong. (What I like best is the ability to play chamber music with other instruments without ever having to force my tone - the bow weight pretty much does it all. To me that's good responsiveness.) But there could be other factors, since the bridge on the mellow cello is 3/16-inch higher than that on the bright instrument (both are shop-expert set up, except for the string selection). This could affect the way the same string brands react on the different cellos.

I don't know where you got your cello, but it sounds like it needs some attention. How old are the strings? There are several shops in Houston that can help you. Lisle and Amati in the village, Gold in Westbury.
E-mail me if you would like more information.
