Vargas Cello Quartets
I've had these Laszlo Vargas cello quartets for a number of months now. Once David Sanders recommends something...

Initially I was put off because they are handwritten, and my eyeballs have enough trouble with regular music. At least I don't have to share a stand! Then there was a small matter of having three other cellists in the same room at the same time with the competence to play some of the quartets. Anyway, thanks to an upcoming adult recital, push came to shove and we are undertaking these finally!

Today there were two of us reading through at lessons, and it went better than I expected. The parts must be very well integrated because we definitely had major gaps. I'm anxious to hear it all come together, as the arrangements were spoken so highly of. E

They're really great to play, and usually challenging! We've done a number of them at our CelloFest.

They're great, aren't they! Which ones are you doing?

Schubert Songs, Chopin Prelude in E Minor, Bach Sarabande and Bourree. I have Bach Suites 5 and 6 and as much as we wanted to try No. 6, there just aren't four of us in Monica's studio who can play up to the necessary level. Something to shoot for, though, right? It would be nice to hear four OTHER celli play them, though, in the interim.

We did that Bach at Black Glove last summer and it was almost my favorite of what we did although the Bourree was hard.

Re: Varga's Cello Quartets
One of the few things that Varga has done that I haven't been wild about have been the unaccompanied Bach Suites. To me they just don't work for cello ensemble. Not enough harmony.

Re: Varga's Cello Quartets
I too like Varga's Cello Q4s. I studied with him for a few years and played many of them during that time. He has made scores of arrangements and publishes them through his own company, Musicelli. Some of them are distributed by Shar.

He still makes lots of arrangements. In fact, he's waiting for me to complete Finale preparing of his edition of the A Major CPE Bach Concerto, in D.
