String trio
music recommendations
Looking for recommendations for string trio music (vln, vla,
vlc).
Any more unusual pieces, that aren't too obscure
(meaning, I can find the music for them), would be
great!
TIA

Not the "famous" string trio c-minor, but a "Serenade" in D major
(?). Wonderful piece! Anna

If it hasn't already been suggested, the Serenade by Dohnanyi is a
terrific piece, full of great moments of lyric beauty, as well as
inventive chromaticism. There is also an arrangement of the Bach
Goldberg Variations by Dmitri Sitkovetsky (Doblinger publ.) which I
have played and would highly recommend!

String
Trios
Mozart Divertimento K.563
This is a lovely piece of music
and readily available.
The 7 trios by Giardini are quite nice
and are listed in the Frank catalog. The cello parts are advanced
and interesting, with excursions to the tenor and treble clefs . I
have an Italian edition Felice Giardini (1716-1796) Sette TRII
Editore Guglielmo Zanibon Padova, catalog G 3697.
The trio in
B flat by Johann Friedrich Reichart (1752-1814) is also quite
enjoyable. It is published by Zimmeramann - Frankfurt ZM 2199 and is
also listed in the Frank catalog. The cello part is easier than the
Giardini, but does go frequently into tenor clef.
Ellen at
Cellos2GO has been locating music of late and you could try her as
well.

Re: String trio

Thanks for the suggestions! Apparently we are supposed to be doing
Beethoven Dmaj. Should be fun... chamber assignments went up today
and the violinist in my trio is one of the faculty members. I guess
this means I'll be spending even more time practicing.

Re: String trio

The staples have been mentioned: Dohnanyi, Mozart, 5 by Beethoven.
There are also two by Schubert, both in B flat. One is one
movement only, the other in 4 movements.
I also recall
playing ones by Reger, Hindemith and Schoenberg. There must be many
more.......

I've done Schubert one mvt. and the Dohnanyi - both really
excellent works. Add any Beethoven.

Re:String trio

some "unusual" trios, which worked very good for us, between
Schubert and Dohnanyi: Armin Kaufmann - trio opus 60. (ed.
Doblinger) a trio dated 1952 from a Austrian/Tsjech composer, not
too difficult to play, but with some tricky ritmes. Rudolf Escher
- Trio a cordes (ed. Donemus Amsterdam) from 1959. Escher is a
Dutch composer, sometimes called a modern impressionist. Very
beautiful music, but not easy. Jean Francaix - Trio (ed. Schott)
a fun piece, if you have a good violinist.
there must be
lots more, but these 3 jump into mind directly.

ditto the Jean Francaix recommendation -- it's a fun piece, and in
case you're not familiar with him, Jean Francaix is usually a kick
to listen to -- very playful stuff.
