Which studies do you recommend?
I am just changing from the double bass to the cello. I know where the positions are and which notes are played in each position, but I need to practise playing in tune in the different positions and position changes. Which studies would you recommend? The studies should start at easy level, just for a player who made it to the first octave of the strings and now needs to get used to playing in all positions. There are so many books with studies, I don't know which one I should order. Thanks a lot for your help!

Regards, Horst

Re: Which studies do you recommend?
1. Something that helped me in re-learning the cello geography:
Sevcik Op.8
(The cello version from Bosworth arr. Haidee & Helen Boyd)

I started practising very slowly & listening/watching for the resonances (eg shifting to G on the C string watch the G string, for A on the C string watch the A string). These notes served me as 'check points'; this may not apply to you but as an adult re-learning the cello I found I had to "re-tune" my ear also. Anyway, I found it helpful.

(I started using anticipated shifts, no vibrato and played at a good volume to keep myself honest.)

2. scales and arpeggios, as always.

3. I've heard Starker's method goes after this pretty throroughly but I haven't looked at it.

4. The Feuillard excercise book is another with lots of shifting exercises.

Regards,

-djm

I second and loudly endorse Rick Mooney's "Position Pieces for Cello".

Mr. Mooney has wonderful diagrams - you learn every note that is available to you "horizontally" across the fingerboard - all the neighboring notes. Wish I had known about this gem years ago.

Thanks a lot to all of you for your recommendations, I will try to get both. Sorefingers, do you know a source where I can order the Mooney online? Ordering here at a local shop in Germany I will have to sell my cello when I receive the bill ;-)
