Strings
(again...)
I am lucky enough to have 2 cellos; one beautiful old Italian, and
one modern Welsh. I mainly use the Italian one, and play with Larsen
Solo loud A and D and Pirastro olive G and C. On the other cello, I
have Jarger medium, but need to treat it to a new set, and want a
change. I use it mainly for orchestral work, but also the odd more
exposed outing. I have to play an audition on it in a few weeks, and
want new strings that work for this. The thing is, being more of a
"gut" gal normally, I'm not really up on whats out there. I've heard
that Bel Canto and Spirocore go well together... The cello is quite
bright and powerful, but needs to stay that way for orchestral solo
passages (William Tell type stuff). I also don't want to have to
spend a fortune trying things out (on a cello that I afterall only
use once every few months). Any ideas?!

Re: Strings

Try Jargar forte A and D. Skip the Belcanto stuff, they're crap. If
you like gut, try the Spirocore Silver G and C, they start out kind
of loud, but tone down to a sort of gut sounding tone. I was a gut
kind of guy for a LONG time, and these are the only steel strings
I've found that sound like the eudoxa olivs I use on my old cello -
although it really depends on the cello. On my Frirsz cello, eudoxas
sound weak and dull, but on the old one, they sound fabulous.
The Jargar/Spirocore combo I use started out as just an
experiment to see what Yo Yo Ma's string setup sounded like on my
Frirsz cello, which is a montagnana copy like his. I liked it so
much, I kept using it.
LBlake and I like to disagree, but
she's got some good suggestions, too. Many people have had good luck
with the Belcanto golds, just no-one I know in meatspace. My stand
partner and I both gave them a good shot, and both concluded that we
didn't like them, but we're both pretty traditional
dark-sounding-strings kind of guys. The A and D actually sounded
kind of allright, although the open string twang of the A was pretty
unbearable. The G and C were too twangy, and didn't have enough
power. The permanents are very popular in the orchestra - several
people use them in various combinations. Also you might want to
consider Obligatos - they've replaced the eudoxas on my old cello,
and sound fabulous - very gut like, but much more stable
intonationally.
And I didn't even mention Flexocores once
yet. These are strings Pirastro designed to be steel replacements
for gut strings - they are very dark sounding low tension strings. I
really like them, was a product tester for them (and obligatos), and
use them for the D, G and C string on my chinese cello. I'd use them
on the Frirsz (and did for a long time), but they don't kick out
quite as much sound as the spirocores do.

If
I were considering strings for a cello that does OK with Jargars,
but I wanted something a little darker but still relatively loud, my
next choice would be Pirastro Permanent Soloists.
Just my
opinion, though, whatever that's worth. I have some spare strings
you can try, if you like. e-mail me if you want, and I'll tell you
what I've got: blakeemail@yahoo.com. You might also contact Ellen at
cellos2go.com.
P.S. I think I even have a Spirocore Silver
G&C you could try. They are truly horrible on my cello (the
worst strings I've ever tried), but Belcanto Golds are wonderful on
mine, so.... go figure.

If you are a "gut sort" (me too!) stay away from the Jargars and
the Larsens, go for a nice synthetic gut. Pirastro makes a couple -
the obligatos, aricores, etc. and Tomastik dominants are good.
Softer than the metal strings, less bright.
