Sound behind and in front of the cello
I'm trying out a better quality cello and one of the first things I noticed is that the sound is rich and full when I listen to someone else play (not necessarily someone better than me, either) but when I am sitting at the cello it seems very different. The more live the room is the worse the cello sounds to me and the better it sounds from across the room. My former teacher told me this is normal for cellos that project well since all the sound is going away from you. What should I hear from a playing position?

Re: Sound behind and in front of the cello
This is a difficult dilemma. It is very important that you like the sound you are making and feel that what you hear is what others are hearing too. How else can you be sure that what is projecting is what you want to project? I have experienced several cellos with this characteristic and I could not play them on a long-term basis. My present cello projects well (after having the neck reset) and also sounds very similar both, when I am playing and when others play it. To my mind, that is the only way it can be.
