Irene Sharp
cello seminar at Mannes
Hi all,
A really interesting week in New York at Irene
Sharp's cello seminar. I am a returning amateur (I quit playing the
cello 30 years ago, and am in the midst of my third try as an adult
to get back to it). To my great relief, there were 3 other adult
amateurs/beginners. The largest group were probably cello teachers,
a couple of performers, and two kids (12 and 15) who are
spectacular. I managed to keep things in proportion, and so can
laugh about my performance during the master class I played in --
ouch! It was nice, actually, to let go of ego and simply do what I
can do. One of the teacher/freelancers in the group mentioned to me
that she loves adult students, but that she thinks part of the
problem for adult students is that we are competent adults in other
aspects of life and are humbled by the difficulties of being a
student of a stringed instrument.
Irene teaches in very
useful and interesting ways, based in part on Alexander techniques
of posture and movement. She also is great in her use of examples
and metaphor.
I know at least one other student in the class,
a professional cellist, reads this list (Hi Susan). I'd love to read
what she thinks of the week we had.

Re: Irene Sharp

This is more telling than any brochure. Knowing what you know now,
would you do it again? What would your recommendations be as far as
perhaps what sort of repertoire one should be playing to feel
somewhat comfortable with the group that was there this year? E

Irene
Sharp
Hi Roberta! What a great review of the seminar-it was a real
treat for me too! I've already started incorporating some of
Irene's ideas into my teaching and it's really working. I found
the seminar so inspiring-Irene is so tuned in to each individual's
playing style and particular problems. When a person played in
class she always had something positive to say at the
beginning and then she went into more detail. What really
impressed me is the fact that she asked me to play in front of the
class about an hour before I had to leave for home-she knew I was
preparing for an audition tape which I did yesterday (it went
very well) and the surprise element of playing excerpts in front of
20 other cellists was quite a challenge. Thanks, Irene, for a great
week. I'm ashamed to say I didn't have time to try a Krispy Kreme
donut-I was too busy to look for a shop! Let's not get onto that
thread again! Cheers to all...... PS I would definitely go
back to another seminar!

Re: Irene

Yes, I would recommend it to others at ALL levels. As you see,
Susan, who is a professional, also got a lot out of it. Anyone going
would have to be prepared to, in a sense, play at their own level.
That is, it could be really upsetting to some amateurs to be the
student in a master class when the audience consists of
professionals, but as I said, Irene doesn't care and the atmosphere
of the class as a whole was welcoming. As for repetoire, she has a
list of pieces on her web site (home.pacbell.net/gszent/)
but also told us quite clearly that she didn't care what we played,
and that last year a student played a scale and they worked on that.
I left the seminar with another beginner, and discovered we were
both thinking about going to next year's seminar.

Re: Irene Sharp

Roberta, your posts have me drooling - I want to attend this next
year! Does she hold these seminars at other times of the year, do
you know? Unfortunately, June is the beginning of our busy season at
work and it's difficult to schedule time off then.
I'm so
glad to hear of your positive experience. Thanks for sharing about
it with us.

cello
seminar
I know she teaches year round, and is off to do two other seminar
and conferences in California this summer. She spends a week a month
during the school year at Mannes School of Music in Manhattan, and
lives and teaches in San Francisco the rest of the year. As for
whether it is "open to the general public" -- you have to be
enrolled, I believe, but there is no audition -- enrollment appears
to be on a first-come, first-served basis.

Galamian
scale
At Irene Sharp's web site I was surprised by the Galamian scale she
showed. The way I remembered Galamian scale (from Meadowmount a very
long time ago) was that the first note was lowered a half step, as
it is at the end. She does something different at the beginning.
Anyone familiar with Galamian Scale?

Re: Galamian

My teacher taught me Galamian Scale a couple months ago. After
visiting Irene's website, it looks to be the same.

I'd love to see her website but can't get a page to open with the
link Roberta posted. Could someone please post a corrected
link?
Thanks

I'm wondering if your teacher learned Galamian scale from Galamian.

Second

No. She learned it from a gent whose name escapes me at the moment
(but I'm sure you'd recognize it . . .). I believe he may have
learned it from Galamian. But I'm really not 100% sure. Sorry this
isn't a more definitive answer - haven't had my coffee yet this
morning and everything's a bit fuzzy!
