Primavera cellos -- any good for adult beginner?
Does anyone know whether Primavera cellos are any good? I have decided to take up the cello, and I'm planning to get one as a special 30th birthday treat! The local violin shop recommended the Primavera 200, at £550 ($750). The owner's daughter played a couple of the cellos for me, and I thought the Prima 200 sounded pretty good for the price. However, I'm hardly an expert, so I'd be grateful for any advice.

I've been thinking about taking up the cello for a few years now, but felt that maybe I was too old to take up such a difficult instrument. However, I've been really encouraged by some of the messages posted here by other adult beginners. Thank you ;)

I think you should rent for a while. If you like playing the cello then you won't be stuck with a $750 cello that you'll outgrow soon. I mean outgrow in the sense that you'll know better; you don't want to kick yourself for buying too soon. When you buy an inexpensive cello before you know what you're looking for, your next cello will cost what it costs plus $750.

Yes, I thought you might say that. I guess I was just getting carried away with it all ... I have a slight concern in that I've heard that rental cellos (often plywood) can 1) sound dreadful and 2) be really hard work to play, and consequently, put the novice off completely. Having said this, I suspect I'll sound pretty awful for the first few months (years?) anyway, so maybe it's not such an issue.

Rental cellos
Not all rental cellos are plywood. Ellen G from the board at: www.cellos2go.com rents cellos, I think, and she makes sure she send out good instruments. The cello you were thinking about buying is most likely plywood for that price - don't you think?

Just read that you're not in the states... rent anyway. You'll find something that a hardy instrument. This whole instrument thing can make your head spin.
