Franck sonata
HELP!!!!!
Hi, I just read that there are two arangments of the Franck sonata
for cello. One version is two octaves below the violin arrangment
(this is the version duPre recorded) and the other is just one
octave lower. Which is most commonly performed? I wondered if anyone
could tell me what edition I should get for the higher version.
Also, on the ICS reportoire list the Franck sonata is rated 12 in
difficulty; is this the higher or lower version?

Re: Franck
sonata HELP!!!!!
I still think that difficulty ratings are far too subjective to
trust. You should be able to tell if it's within your technical
abilities just by listening to it. Ratings have their place, but for
the most part, I think their hokey! I've never had to deal with
difficulty ratings in my entire music life. (look how I turned out )
I
think 2 octaves below would sound silly. Maybe on a Double Bass (as
I've heard it played once) it might make sense. But I've always
played it one one octave below (that's the way Rose plays it,
right?)
I've never heard a cellist perform it 2 octaves
below. If you have to play it 2 octaves below on the cello because
it's easier, then I think it's better to wait until you can play it
just one octave below. Don't spoil your first experience with this
work.
BTW, I don't do the octave displacements that the Rose
edition has, I generally try to keep everything the same way as in
the original violin part (esp. 2nd movement) just one octave lower.

reclaiming...
Did you know that the Franck sonata was originally concieved for
cello, then Franck needed a quick birthday pressie for a violinist
friend (think that was for Ysaye but I could be wrong on that)... so
transcribed it for the violin (and then flute too). So that was how
it was originally published, and ever since, the cello version has
been seen as an "arrangment".

HELP
AGAIN!!!!!!!!
I've only got 2 recordings of the Franck sonata: Jackie duPre and
Ofra Harnoy; Harnoy plays it an octave above duPre. Is this how you
play it? I've ordered the edition published by IMC, I want to play
the higher version-is it the only version available? Also, why did
duPre record a lower version?

Re: Franck
sonata HELP!!!!!
I'm not sure how high and low your versions are- The "norm" is
starting the first mov. the D 4th finger on the A string pitch, 2nd
mov on open A pitch ect. The Du Pre version is the "normal" one
(IMC). I don't know what the Ofra Harnoy one is like, but as a rule,
I would not take it too seriously...

I've never heard this story before. Can we somehow verify it? I'd
love to know that it was originally a cello sonata.
Where's
Quarles???

Re: HELP
AGAIN!!!!!!!!
I would strongly recommend the Leonard Rose recording which is a
rare jewel in recording history. You can purchase it through
WGMS...I forgot the link but Im sure someone else will post it again
if you ask.
I do play from the OMC edition but there are some
passages which Rose puts one octave lower that I put back up so that
the entire piece is exactly one octave lower (for the most part)
than the violin arrangement.
I can't remember the DuPre
recording that my friend let me listen to back about 20 years ago.
It just didn't stick in my mind for some reason.
In the
meantime, why not listen to some good violin recordings of this
work?

Re: HELP
AGAIN!!!!!!!!
Last week I ordered two of 'em thru the Clarice Smith Center at the
University www.claricesmithcenter.umd.edu/
Got
'em yesterday - fantastic!
But at this moment, the whole
website appears to be in some sort of transition. I believe the
number to call was the box office. The title is "Leonard Rose
Remembered."
Ah -- WGMS is at www.wgms.com/
and has a link to the CD...

Re:

Well, a violin teacher at my last school told me this.
Franck had been working on a sonata for cello and piano and had
composed one movement (the first in the final version), then he
needed a wedding gift for a friend, don't know who the friend was
though...so he transcribed the first movement of his cello sonata
and wrote three other movements and presto - there was the violin
sonata in A major. The sonata is supposed to describe their
marriage, it's a very interesting thought, isn't it?
