in a
trance
I usually watch TV while I practice. I find that I enter a kind of
trance and my playing becomes very fluent. But if I concentrate on
what I'm playing, the piece becomes ragged.

I'll second that
emotion
Dear sweet, convivial cello chatters,
Practicing while
watching TV is the best. My playing becomes second nature during
Oprah and Jenny Jones--it is wonderfully relaxing. It's a sybaritic
combination that I crave: Bach Suites and Makeovers For Mom, what a
rush!!!!
with all my love, and that's a lotta
love,
BettyLou

Re: in a

Have you ever had that experience when you drive through a town and
know that you've done it but are out the other side but can't
remember any of the details? Well sometimes when I'm playing a piece
but thinking of something else I suddenly realise I'm finished but
don't remember how I got there.
Luckily this only happens
occasionally at the end of a long practice session! And with
familiar pieces.

Re: I'll second

and I, I... I usually take a shower while playing pieces like
Tschaikowskys Pezzo Capricioso or his Rococo thing. Those pieces are
so relaxing, almost boring, that I definitely have to do something
else not to fall asleep... ;-)

Practising while
watching TV
Gee, I wonder if watching TV would help me learn that b**** of
an excerpt, Bartered Bride? Any suggestions of fingerings for
those first two pages would be greatly appreciated!

In the shower?
I never go into a trace during Pezzo - too dangerous - might lose a
thumb if I'm not careful!

Re: B*****
Bride...
I had to play that in an exam yesterday; I don't know what
fingering you're doing at the moment, but from bar 65, this works
quite well: A 1 2 4 1 2 1 4 / 2 1 2 3 2 1 th 1(on d) A
ect. the other nasty bit, 73 on: 3 1 3 4 3 1 4 2 / 1 th 1 2 1
th 3 2 (x4) then back to normal in 78. Hope that's some help and
makes sense! The second one esp. takes a lot of getting used to, but
stops your hand getting too cramped and allows you to play it far
faster in the end. Have fun (yeah right)!
