What is Your
favourite cello piece?
This is my first post, so I'm not sure if this has been done before
(Probably has), but what is your favourite piece of cello music?
Mine is Boccherini - Cello Concerto in B flat. I like it because its
Loud, fast and minor!

i LOVE minors!!! I have a book of the Chopin Nocturnes for piano
and half of them are in minor!! I love it! I don't have a favourite
cello piece yet, since i've only been playing for 9 months.

Hands down, the best cello piece ever is Dvorak's cello concerto.
It is so beautiful and impressive. It's also one of the most fun
pieces to play, and it's neat watching someone else play it. So much
movement and energy.

Re: What is Your

I like the Elgar and Dvorak Cello Concertos and Tchaikovsky's
Rococo Variations (none of which I can play). My favorite piece to
play is Bach's first suite. And yeah, Ewan B., it probably has
been done before, but so what?

My favorite piece changes constantly. Usually it's the piece that
I'm working on. You ahve to like the piece your working on a lot or
you don't have the patience to work on it.

i love them all, but if i had to pick my favourites, i would have
to say the bach suites(esp.the 3rd), the elgar, and the dvorak. but
i can't say that i have met a cello piece i haven't liked, now if
only i could play them!

So surprised- no one has written any cello sonatas! Some of my
favorites are the Beethoven, Brahms, Prokofiev, Carter, Poulenc,
Chopin, Debussy, and Mendelssohn sonatas. As for concertos, Rococo
is wonderful, I love Kol Nidre by Bruch, and of course Dvorak.

Hi Aaron !!
I play piano too, and I also love Chopin's
Nocturnes. But... I like his Fantaisie-Impromptu opus 66 even better
! His polonaises are also great.
Love, Martine.

Re: What is Your

i would probably have to say a tie between shostakovich no.1, the
bach suites, and the elgar. close therafter are the saint-saėns no.2
and the dvorąk, which i am going to get to see in concert next
saturday! and i may even get to see the shostakovich in january, if
i'm very very very lucky! oh yeah, and lets not forget the
swan!
¤me¤
ps- you know some other awesome pieces are
harmonilehiere (good lordy, that spelling!) and the chairman dances
by john adams! *<:¢D->-<

Fantaisie
Impromptu
Can you actually play that piece? Very impressive if you can. I
have the music for it, and the whole 4 vs. 3 (or 8 vs. 6 depending
on how you look at it) just keeps me away from it! (I did play a
piece once that had a whole section of 5 vs. 3, which was actually
easier than the Impromptu)
I'm working on his first Sonata
right now. Every time I go to buy more piano music, I tell myself
that I have enough stuff by Chopin, and I try with all there is in
me to not even go to his section in the store, but I always seem to
walk out with another Chopin book.
Oh well.
One of these days I'll end up buying all there is to buy, and I'll
have to start collecting another composer, maybe Bartok. . . .
.

Re: Fantaisie
Impromptu
Fantaisie Impromptu isn't as difficult as it sounds . You
should just start very slowly and watch the 3 versus 4 going
rytmically correct till you do that automaticly. Then play it in
tempo. It's very beautiful, in my opinion. I especially like Maria
Joćo Pires playing it !!! Do you know Pires ????
P.S. I'm
going to start with the Chopin Etudes !!! Finally, my teacher (who's
with no doubt the most lovely in the world) thinks I'm ready for
them !! I'm gonna start with the one in c# , it's sooo beautiful !!!

Re: Fantaisie
Impromptu
Have fun with the Etudes. I LOVE the "Revolutionary Etude" (op. 10
no. 12) I have it on CD. I have the music for the etudes too!
I guess now that marching band is over, I'll have more time
to work on piano. Right now I am practicing for auditions. I have a
Percussion audition this saturday for honor band, and 2nd round
All-State Choir audition next saturday. Once I'm finished with
those, I can put the Impromptu in there with the Sonata. That'll
give me something to work on for a while! The bad news is, I'm no
longer taking piano lessons. I
took for, i guess, 8 years (?) and then my teacher stopped giving
them altogether, and I haven't found another good teacher yet. That
was two years ago. I guess I can always check with OCU (Oklahoma
City University. That's where I want to go to college) and see if I
can take lessons through them. They have a WONDERFUL music program.
In fact, I think I'll email them right now.

fav cello
i would have to say my favorites would be:
*the Dvorak
concerto. beautiful! *the
Saint Saens concerto--it reminds me so much of autumn...and the
transition between the seasons. *the Shastakovich concerto no.1-
very powerful and challenging.. *the Schumann concerto is also
lovely and one of my favorites, in particular the first
movement. *first movement of the first Brahms sonata as well, it
just paints a very vivid picture of my love for the cello for some
reason. i connect and relate completely with it.

Re: fav

Hmmm:
- Shostakovich Cello Concerto #1 - Shostakovich
Cello Sonata - Prokofiev/Brahms Cello Sonatas - Schumann Cello
Concerto - Kodaly: Sonata For Solo Cello - Bright Sheng: Seven
Tunes Heard In China
I used to like John Corigliano's
Phantasmagoria for Cello and Piano...but, not now. There's not much
to it actually.

Jarrett-
You must have "solo" by Yo-Yo Ma as well! I LOVE the Kodaly Sonata
(op.8 ), but am not too fond of "Seven Tunes."
I Also love
the immortal Dvorak concerto.
