re: Encore...for
Laura or anyone else who knows about Encore
So you are at Encore! Heard it's a good camp. Questions: What is
the age range? Is it mostly college age or do they take younger
students? What about the level? Is everyone there totally
phenomenal? Do Richard Weiss and Richard Aaron teach there, and if
so what's the scoop on them? If you don't want to go public about
them, I'll send you my e-mail address. Thanks! By the way, my cello
kid is at the Indiana U. String Academy this summer. Oh, and who are
you studying with?

Aaron
I don't have scoop on Richard Aaron on a personal level, but he
lived in Seattle for many years. He had many marvelous cello
students, all very natural-seeming players. I think he incorporated
the Alexander Technique into his teaching. I believe Daniel Lee, who
just received an Avery Fischer Career Grant, studied with him for
many years before going to Rostropovich. Daniel followed him to
Cleveland from Seattle, so Aaron must be doing something right.

Re: re:
Encore...for Laura or anyone else who knows about Encore
Well, this is only my first summer at Encore, and I've only been
here four days, so I'm still finding out about some
things.
The overall level is very high; at dinner yesterday
people were discussing some of the solo gigs these 12 and 13yr olds
have with major orchestras. Age ranges from about 13 to early
twenties, pretty well balanced between the ~250 students. The campus
is very nice, and clean!, though because most of the practice rooms
are not air-conditioned things can get very hot very fast,
especially if you have a quartet crammed in a little dorm room. The
program focuses on solo work and chamber music. The schedule is
flexible: 8AM-noon are practice hours, then lunch, then
lessons/coachings/rehearsals/more practice or nap time during the
afternoon, with concerts and more of the same at dinner. The bottom
line is: You can be successful if you want to, or you can sleep all
day and waste your $4K.
It is inspiring, to say the least.
Hearing the person in the next room practice one scale for two hours
definitely makes me want to become a more focused & dedicated
practicer. Plus, with a roommate who practices every waking second,
I feel the guilt-factor whenever I take fifteen minutes off! The
guilt-factor is a very strong practice motivational tool for
me.
Richard Aaron does teach here. He generally teaches only
the most advanced students but he does do a big cello masterclass
for all the cellists as well as a few open scale classes (will
report on those later when I get a chance to go). From what I've
heard, he is one of those people who just seems to know how to
teach. Aaron is supposed to be a really nice teacher, plus a really
intense teacher. Don't know about Weiss, but if I hear anything I'll
let you know.
I'm studying with my professor from WMU, Bruce
Uchimura (this way he gets to harrass me year-round!).
Given
I have a lesson in an hour, I should probably get
cracking.

Thanks, Laura! Maybe you can post updates about concerts, things
you've heard about teachers, etc.--Kind of a diary of Laura's summer
at Encore. I studied in Cleveland, so I guess I have a soft spot for
the goings on there.

Re: Aaron
I went to CIM when Richard came from Seattle. I luckily got the
chance to work with him on my cello playing as well as the "art" of
pedagogy before I left Cleveland. He is truly a wonderful teacher
and person. I hope to drive this summer to catch a few lessons and
observe some lessons. I have heard wonderful things about Bruce
U. and with Richard Weiss I only know is a great player and a really
nice guy (he coached our cello sectionals at CIM). Weiss was Alisa
Weilerstein's teacher before she left for college. Have a great
summer and there is a great place to get milkshakes where all the
shopping is! :-) Colleen
