Another
Beginner
Hello all. I'm another lurking adult (43 yr old) beginner. Been
"playing" for about four months (squeak squeak). I love this
instrument, but wow,…it's hard! I've played acoustic guitar for
years, and I've always wanted to play the cello. I kick myself that
I didn't start earlier. Oh well, no time like the present, eh? So
I'm to the point that I really need a teacher, and I'm having a heck
of a time finding one. Any advice, names, etc. would be greatly
appreciated. I live in Riverside, CA. By the way, I've learned quite
a bit from all of you. Thank you very much!

Hi Campbell,
I am 42 years old which makes of course a big
difference! :-) I started 4 weeks ago, but I have played the double
bass for more than 20 years on a pretty high level. Just a hint.
There is another cellist who played the guitar and startet the cello
at your age. And he composed a cello concerto for himself that can
be downloaded from his website. It is www.ethanwiner.com, look at
the cello section of his page. I had an interesting discussion with
him about bowing a couple of years ago, and I think he is a ICS
member as well, but doesn't write here very often. Good
luck!

Welcome aboard to both of you. Our motto on this board is borrowed
from John Holt-- It's "never too late."

Welcome to both of you! I turned 46 yesterday, and have been
playing a year and a half. I agree with Bobbie- it is never too
late, and yes, the cello can be difficult. Stick with it; and you'll
not regret it. Welcome!

At age 51, I started the cello, my first stringed instrument ever.
After 1 1/2 years of weekly lessons and pretty much daily practice,
I'm actually beginning to sound like a cello player. I have very
small hands (challenge) and I seem to hold all of my tension in my
hands (yet another challenge). But ask me if I'm glad that I'm doing
this...you know the answer. Of course, it's the best adventure ever.
Just think how good I'll be in another 5 years...I won't even be 60!
