Cello
'bands'
Does anyone know of any cellist(s) that play music that isn't
classical? (Besides Apocalyptica) I like the cello's sound, but
frankly, Mozart's not my kind of guy. Thanks.
By the way, for
those of you who have heard Apocalyptica, how are your opinions of
them? I'm considering whether or not to buy some of their CDs.

Re: Cello

There is all types of *Classical* music. Mozart's not my kind of
guy either, but Chopin and Prokofiev are. Do some more exploring in
*Classical* music before you totally rule it out. I used to hate
Classical music because I had never really heard any that interested
me. Now I love it. Maybe you just haven't heard what there is that
will click for you.
As far as cello bands, there are several
oppurtunities to use cello in rock music as a back-up instrument to
guitars and drums. Or you can write your own pieces that have a
style that appeals to you.
Also, Yo-Yo Ma (I know some of you
here don't like his cross-over stuff, but for the moment hold your
tongue) has played several other types of music besides *Classical*.
He's played Tango, (which is actually a lot of fun to listen to,
trust me. )and played
with Bobby McFerrin (which I haven't heard myself. Perhaps Corrina
could tell you more about that album. I believe it was her that
raved about it not too long ago), and even played jazz in a CD that
I've never found in stores, but have seen at Amazon.com. Also, his
album titled "Solo" is a great CD that demonstrates the beautiful
sound of the cello in music that is definitely not your typical
Classical repertoire.

i agree about
mozart
I know how you feel about mozart, I don't care for him either. But
I agree with Aaron. There is alot of "classical" music. Have you
heard Faure's Elegie? It is dark (elegie meaning death) and is so
not like mozart. Yo yo ma has done some very cool cd's and explores
all kinds of music not just classical, his solo cd is my favorite! I
love what he does with mark o'conner's appalachian waltz and all of
the other. Have you heard Dvorak? His concerto for cello in b minor
is SO COOl! I love it! He is also very diffrent from mozart and bach
etc. etc. You can also look for things by more contemporary or
modern composers (last 100-150 years or so) which includes
Kabilevsky (sp?) and Hindemith. Elgar and Schostokovich are also non
mozart and bach etc. etc. I don't know of many cello bands, but just
look around some!
good luck rachel oh, and Yo Yo Ma
and Bobby McFerrin's cd is very neat, at first I thought it was two
cellists! Very fun stuff!!!!!

Check out Rasputina. They're three chicks that play rock cello. You
can hear clips on their home page, www.rasputina.com in the
"audibles" section. It's definitely a different sort of thing than
classical and apocalyptica. I personally don't like apocalyptica,
but it's a matter of taste really, to each their own! Have fun!

K's Choice and
Krezip
are 2 examples of bands that use cello by their ballads. IMHO,
Mozart is great, but I'd prefer romantic music too. xxx Martine.

Thanks
Thanks, I'll go try out some of your suggestions. By the way.....
does anyone know where I can download some of these types of music?
(I don't like that buffering junk when you don't download.) If not,
I guess I'll just have to go and buy this stuff.
