He played the Debussy and Rachmaninoff sonatas, Chopin Polonaise ((a combined version of the orig and Feuermann, with a few more emendations) and ended with a rendering of the Viuextemps "Variations Amerique" or some such name, which was a piece for violin and piano which the composer offered on a rather unsuccessful American tour, a virtuoso tour de force based on Yankee Doodle Dandy, which is searingly difficult and Zuill played the piss out of it, as well as everything else. He's a tremendous cellist, period, much more interesting player than the one i heard about a year ago in Machold's when we were playing his Goffriller. Finally has the cello sounding where he wants it, and after mucho experimenting with bridges, sound post setting and strings (Jargars on A and D, silver Olives on the bottom, which do wonders for the amazingly throbby bass). Catch him if he's in your area...he's a terrific guy, quite accessible, enthusiastic. Total cello geek, recording hound. His playing is certainly in his own voice, but reflecting a keen stylistic and sonic homage to Feuermann and Piatigorsky, to this listener. I'd have to admit to him being a great cellist even if he were my worst enemy (which, thankfully, he is NOT). Keep your eye on this guy! (not what you think, ladies....sheesh!) Paul Tseng My Website Alexander's Photo Albums Free Cello Music! Hope I get to hear him sometime. I like that you included the kind of strings he uses. justinkagan1 Registered User Posts: 395 (6/22/01 8:28:45 am) Reply Re: Zuill Bailey mini-recital -------------------------------------------------------------------------------- Mercifully, we didn't discuss the d-word, but he does live perilously close to the really bad KK/gyro shop on 34th and 7th Ave. I only included the strings note because his search for the "optimal" sound of his mighty Gofriller has included extensive experimentation with different bridges and strings, and the difference have been tremendous. Silver Olives aren't for everybody! He spent a lot of time tuning the bottom during the concert as the strings were quite new...at one point sort of shook his head amusedly when the C refused to cooperate (it was a humid night) and just went on after not getting it. yo yo jr Registered User Posts: 42 (6/22/01 11:16:07 am) Reply Zuill -------------------------------------------------------------------------------- oh man, Zuill Bailey is amazing! I heard him play the Chopin Polonaise Brillante at Barge music, in New York, he does these crazy things like all of the sudden down-bow staccato break-outs, and his vibrato...I can't explain it its so great. By the way, I heard that Jargars are sometimes amazing but other times not so great is this true?
