cello suites
analysis - PLEASE HELP!
i think someone here will have more of an idea than i do on this -
i have to analyse the prelude to d minor suite, and i'm finding it
really impossible - if anyone can help in any way - either with
harmonic analysis or written analysis, it would be really
appreciated
Thanks, Amber (a relative newbie to CC)

Re: cello suites

I don't know how much theory you have studied, or exactly what kind
of analysis you are expected to do, but the first thing I would do
would be to look at the movement as a whole. Note what key it is in,
and what other keys it passes through. Think about what the musical
effect is of the particular keys touched upon. Where are the biggest
arrival points, and why do they seem so? Note where melodic patterns
repeat, and whether they represent a return or a variation or an
intensification on the original thought. A simplified sketch of
these kinds of things can give a good sense of the shape of the
piece.
After considering the life of the piece on the largest
scale, it's worth looking at the individual chords that are implied.
In the prelude you are looking at, the chords are more often than
not fairly clear, as there are lots of arpeggios and many of the
scalar patterns outline chords by changing direction or placing
chord tones on downbeats.

It's also a very good one for looking at transformation of a
musical theme/ cell. Take the first 3 notes, and find how they are
used in the rest of the movement. This also will tie in with Toms
Harmonic ideas.

Are you familiar with Schenker Analysis? I find that sort of layer
analysis very helpful in studying Bach.

Do any of you know of a book on Schenker Analysis, or one that has
a decent amount of info about it?

Re: Schenker
analysis
Felix Salzer. "Structural Hearing: Tonal Coherence in Music."
This was originally published in 2 volumes, one of text, the
other of musical examples. Dover combined the 2 volumes into one for
their 1982 republication.
Plus, there are collections of
Schenker's own analyses. One I know of is
Heinrich Schenker.
"Five Graphic Music Analyses."
also published by Dover.
