New Harmony wolf
note suppressor (New product)
Last week I received the following e-mail from David Bice of New
Harmony:
Hi Andy, Thought I'd let you know that my wolf
note suppressors are now being shipped. They are ultra simple with
no rubber liner, no thumb screw, or lock nut to loosen and rattle.
You simply loosen the string, put the string in the (slightly curved
- which is why you have to loosen the string [Andy's notation])
grove of the wolf note suppressor, bring the string back up to
pitch, and then move the wolf note suppressor to the best location
to suppress the wolf. Although more time and experience are needed,
they seem to be quite effective. This may be due to a design
that eliminates the need for a rubber liner. In addition, I think
they have less detrimental effect on the sound of the string they
are attached to, maybe because there is a direct contract between
the string and the brass of the wolf note suppressor. They will
fit both the C and G strings. I presently sell 7, 9, 11, and 13 gm
weights so the lightest suppressor can be used for a given cello.
Because they seem quite effective, I will have 5 gm suppressors
available in a couple of weeks. The retail price is $16.00
each.
Please let me know if you would like to see one. I'd
appreciate any comments you might have. I keep thinking the more
input I get, the better quality product I can
produce.
Best wishes, David
I ordered one and
installed it this morning (on my Jay-Haide cello). This really
is a superior product. It is easy to install. It is easy to
adjust. It is attractive enought to be a sculpture. It
preserves or even enhances the tone of the cello. Most important,
it "traps" the wolf and allows one to move it very precisely away
from interfering with playing and the sound of the cello.
I
ordered a 9 gram suppressor, because it is about the same mass as my
previous brass/rubber suppressors. There is really no comparison in
both the effectiveness of the two types or the precision of
eliminating the wolf. With the New Harmony suppressor I can actually
track the wolf moving to different neighboring notes until it
disappears (or hides between notes). The response of the lower
strings seems to be much better than it had been with the other
suppressor(s). After installing this wolf suppresor the upper half
of my C string is quite playable and "tonefull," and in that respect
equal or even superior to some pretty pricy cellos I have
tried.
I mount it on the C string afterlength, as I have
other suppressors for about 4 years. I have found this more
effective than on the G string and it doesn't get in the way of
using a two-hole Tourte mute.
I intend to get two more to use
on my other cellos as well.
Andy

Re: New Harmony
wolf note suppressor (New product)
Andy,
While I haven't had the opportunity yet to try the
wolf eliminators (neither of my cellos has a wolf, oddly enough) I
can concur with your opinion as to their beauty and simplistic
design. I enclosed a photo with this message - hopefully it will
turn out.
I plan on testing these out quite a bit on various
cello lines within the coming weeks, so my comments might be found
on this board as well...

This really isn't Tracie, I'm just using her computer. It's Bobbie.
I also have tried Dave's wolf suppressors and I like them a lot. I
haven't quite decided which is the best size, but the ease of
adjustment and effectiveness is excellent. I think I am going to
purchase two, of different weights, as my wolf gets worse at certain
times of the year. These are so easy to adjust and move and replace
that they easily allow for changing conditions.
I also just
installed a Dave Bice endpin and endpin fitting, and I'm also
extremely pleased with that.

I'm me
now
They really are beautiful little things, I have to say. I don't
have much of a wolf either though, so I don't need one, but was
experimenting with them a little. Do you really need to loosen the
string to put them on? The one I was playing with I just popped on
there without any loosening. Is that bad?

Re: New Harmony
wolf note suppressor (New product)
I tried them as well - LOVED IT !!!
I replaced a 7g or 9g
weight "old fashioned" brass/rubber & screw suppressor - not
sure, don't have an accurate scale here with the New Harmony
suppressor. I was pleasantly surprised at the results. Not only was
the wolf ELIMINATED, but the cello's voice began projecting like
never before - the entire cello body was vibrating - I could feel it
through my ample padding - darn KK's !
I've experimented with
two - I believe they're 7g & 11g (not marked). The 7g is exactly
what I need for "regular" orchestral work. The 11g is just what I
need right now for some special work I'm doing in Trio work and a
Chamber group - helps to "tone down"/mellow, take the "edge" off my
cello - I blend in better with the smaller group. I know that's not
the original purpose, but it does exactly what I need.
The
esthestics are pleasing as well - they look like mini sculptures. I
have entertained myself during long measures of rests by admiring
them. Thank You David Bice !!! You've covered all the bases. LOL

I just popped one on, too, and it didn't seem to cause any kind of
problem. I'll ask Dave and let you all know.

Ellen has them at http://www.cellos2go.com/
, and I think you can get them directly from Dave at http://www.newharmonymusic.com/
as well.

Installing
David Bice says that you may have to loosen the string but that if
they do just pop on as they evidently do on some of the thinner
strings he didn't think it would hurt the string. He himself loosens
the strings to put them on, but says they can be adjusted while the
strings are at pitch.

Re:New Harmony
wolf note suppressor (New product)
Whoopee ! Got my selection of the New Harmony wolf suppressors and
started experimenting. So far I have the 13 gram one on my C string,
the 11 gram one on my G string, and .... the 7 gram one, on my *D*
string. My cello doesn't have much of a wolf never did - but these
wolf suppressors really increase the projection and vibration on all
of the strings. I have no idea why these things work but I know what
I'm hearing and it is amazing. Take'm off the string and I lose a
lot of volume.
The Bice carbon fiber stake is getting put on
by my luthier tomorrow, can't wait !!
