Help... I need
cello recommendations.
I have thought about learning to play the cello for quite some time,
and I am just beginning the search for a rent-to-own cello. My
research has led me to a company that deals in many names (Scott
Cao, Doetsch, Hausner, Dunov, Gilga Gems, Eastman), and also to
Stringworks (which makes and sells only their own cellos). I have no
idea about any of them. Does anyone have any knowledge of
Stringworks cellos or any recommendations in choosing between the
many names? Is there anyone else that you might recommend?

Stringworks is a
good company...
My opinion is that Stringworks is a reliable company to buy a cello
from. Todd French, owner of Stringworks is the moderator of the
Instruments and Equipment board for the Internet Cello
Society.
Cellos2Go.com with Ellen Gunst is also a good place
to buy a cello.

I really love my Doetsch cello. But you'll need to try some or have
someone you know who plays cello try some and see what you like.
Don't quote me on this, but Ellen at Cellos2Go has a rental program,
which applies towards the purchase of your own cello, which (I don't
think) has to be the one you're renting. That way you can learn to
play enough to try out cellos.

new cellos to
try
Speaking of Todd French and String Works, I was his cello teacher
when he was an undergrad at IWU.
You might look into the WH
Lee shop in Chicago for cellos to try and compare. They specialize
in new cellos and sell some older ones too. They have 5 or 6 makers
crafting new cellos there all the time. You can actually watch them
being made in the three floors of the Fine Arts Building. The tour
is very interesting.
Some owners of their cellos include
Janos Starker, Ko Iwasaki, Eric Kim, David Finkle, Laszlo Varga,
Carter Enyeart, Barbara Hedlund and more. I never use my old English
cello any more but play exclusively on a Garavaglia from their shop.
Their new cellos are responsive, easy to play, well made, and very
resonant. Give a look at their web site.

They also have an interesting slide show of violin making on their
web site. Happy hunting.
