Vargas Cello
Quartets: what are they and how can I get them?
I've heard a few references on this board to Vargas cello quartet
arrangements. Can somebody describe these to me and tell me where
they are available? I play in a cello quartet and we are searching
for additional repertoire, especially classical. We have some of the
Kunzelmann collections (jazz, tango, and ragtime) but we're putting
together a concert and need some meat to go with the lighter pieces.
Would Vargas fit the bill? Any other suggestions?

Musicelli
website
hometown.aol.com/vcello1/index.html
This
is where to see the listing, but I recommend talking to someone who
is familiar with them, has played them. The level of difficulty
varies among the parts. I ordered several of them and we're playing
a few currently. My fear of manuscript and difficulty has abated as
we've been working through. We're already taking on a new one as our
confidence builds.
A bunch of people on the board have
played them. Put out any kind of food post and D. Sanders will
respond. When you have his attention, ask him about the Vargas.
(Sorry, David. It's my way of getting even for all the money you
cost me in URL enticements.) E

KRISPY KREME
DOUGHNUTS!!!
Maybe that will get David's attention...
Thanks, Ellen! What
a great source! I certainly can't purchase all of the music on the
website, so I'd really appreciate input and recommendations on
specific pieces from others who have played the Varga arrangements.
Also, just how advanced are the pieces in the "Tenor Clef Dwellers"
Collection?

Re: Vargas Cello
Quartets: what are they and how can I get them?
I think you can order things directly from Varga's company,
Musicelli, plus Shar now distributes some of his arrangements.
I think they are quite good. The first cello part is
sometimes quite demanding in his arrangements, (he was writing for
himself!) but one of the virtues of his arranging is that he passes
interesting material around to all the parts. Unless he's been
having them reprinted, most of the arrangements are in a pretty neat
(Varga's own hand copy) manuscript.
I played a bunch of these
with him when he was cello professor at U of Houston. I remember
some of his favorites were the Bach Chaconne, Vivaldi Concerto
Grosso, CPE Bach Concerto, an excerpt from Tristan, Claire de Lune,
etc, etc, on and on........ He made literally 100s of
arrangements.

I've got 3 or 4 of them, purchased from Shar, no doubt. I could
never get our cello quartet to work on them - too high, too hard,
too lazy, pick your excuse. They aren't impossible, but they aren't
easy either. You need a fairly proficient group. That being said,
the arrangements are really lovely, well worth the effort.

How about the
Colin Hampton Bach arrangements?
I've been trying to find a Hampton arrangement of the Sarabande
from the 6th Bach cello suite. Seems it's out of print. Anyone know
otherwise? Jonathan

Re: KRISPY KREME

I'm not sure if I should be insulted or proud. Maybe I could get a
commission from KK.
The Varga arrangements are wonderful.
I've played a number of them. My favorite is the Vivaldi Concerto
Grosso, but it is quite difficult.
Good luck.

want to talk about Skyline Chili.

Said as a compliment, David. Your ability to take a computer chip
post and turn it into a potato chip post is unequalled. It was a
funny thread. It was also probably so long ago you don't remember
it. Along about the time of "Nono's Nonette." I love the humor in
this place.
I did get the Feuermann CD the same time Gary got
vertigo. In fact it was my attempt at writing about it which led to
the dizzy cellist post.
Thanks for the recommendation. The
little flyer that came with it indicates more releases on the way.
I'll start saving now for when you dangle the next URL in front of
me.

Level of
difficulty
Barbara Hedlund can guide you if you call the Musicelli number.
Some pieces are notoriously difficult, some more user
friendly.
I wish I had not overreacted to the manuscript
initially. When Monica decided to put the cello quartet together and
handed each of us a part, it turned out to be not as daunting as I'd
thought. Having heard the lovely blending of cellos, I would not
hesitate to spend the time working through more.
Our group
consists of a 1-2 yr student, I think a 4-yr, me, and then a former
conservatory student who had a lengthy hiatus. The pieces are the
Chopin Prelude, Bach Bouree and Sarabande from -- uh oh, I can't
remember... -- and a Schubert piece. We all were so pleased with the
results that we're going to look at the other ones I have here or
order more to continue playing together. For two of the members, it
was the first time they'd ever played in ensemble. We smiled all the
way through because it just sounded soooooooo nice!
If you
want to e-mail me I can give you more particulars on the ones I own,
but as you can see, the list is enormous. It really may be more of a
help to tell Barbara the skill of your players and let her point you
in the right direction. E

Re: Vargas Cello
Quartets: what are they and how can I get them?
Thanks again, folks! I played this version of the Vivaldi Concerto
Grosso back in college, and this was one of the pieces that I was
hoping to find as I don't have the music - mission
accomplished.
All of the members of my quartet are competent
adult players. Most of us teach lessons and have performance degrees
or equivalent. I agree with Ellen about the sound of celli playing
in harmony - nothing better! I'll phone Barbara for some
suggestions. I'm still open for more input from cello-chatters.

Dear Cello Colleagues,
Well, I finally got in to post a reply

help post this message earlier, but I can finally do it myself.
