When Travelling:
old subject, need answers quick.
Hi, I just got offered an incredible gig in Mexico. Long story
short, I can't turn it down... problem is I live in Canada and do
not have a case suitable for taking the plane, the plane ticket is
being aranged for me and it's looking like there's no way to get an
extra seat, and i can't afford to pay for one myself. I've called
some luthiers in my area (Montreal) about renting airplane cases.
Wilder only rents out airplane case covers, I'm thinking "no", as no
matter how cushy the cover is my hard case is so rickity-i mean it
doesn't even close properly, it's all crooked. One luthier sugested
I build a bigger wooden box to go around my case and fill the space
in between with packing stuff, this is a very very last resort. So,
my question is this: do you know of anyone or company that rents
airplane cello cases?? Thank you ever so much, Andrea

cello case
rental
Hi Andrea! Are you the one I met at the Toronto audition? I live
in Ottawa. Anyway, David Gage in NYC rents shipping cases-I
needed one in June because I was flying to NYC from Ottawa, but they
were all out of cases because various orchestras were on tour. Try
them now, they may not be so busy. Also, I did notice that Ellen
at cellos2go sells the Bam Flight cover, in which a Bam hard case
fits-do you have a Bam hard case? I ended up borrowing a similar
case from a luthier here in Ottawa, but I just put the cello itself
in there and packed it with lots of bubble wrap. It worked really
well, but I made SURE that I carried the cello to the gate and
picked it up on the tarmac. Be really nice to the baggage handler
and tell him to load the case on top of the other
luggage. Congratulations on your gig!

Re: When
Travelling
I'm a Montrealer too - hi! I've only ever shipped my cello by
train, but when my cousin relocated he shipped his by air from
Vancouver to Halifax in a wooden crate in which he packed his hard
case. It arrived with no problem. I haven't been to see a Montreal
luthier in years since Anton Wilfer closed; have you tried Violons
Etc, or Jules St Michel (although I don't like them)? You can also
call Shar in Toronto - they've been so helpful to me over the past
few years since Wilfer vanished, and they might have a solution for
you. Heck, I'd lend you mine, but it's dented and the hinges are
warping... I wouldn't trust it to protect even my student-level
model in a plane. But there's always a risk. No matter which method
you choose, take out excellent short-term travel
insurance!
Best of luck.
