String Length - Not Too Technical
Hi all,

My cello is size 7/8, and I'm wondering if I should trim the string ends an inch or so before installing them on my cello. (Is the end that goes into the pegs the "beforelength, since the other end is the afterlength?, ha ha.) I guess the only reason I wonder about this is to avoid having to crank the pegs so much. How many turns worth of string should be on the pegs, anyway??

TIA,
MaryK

Re: String Length - Not Too Technical
I would leave them as is unless the extra length is causing problems with the pegs. Sometimes the G and D strings can rub on the C and A pegs as the string passes over them. If there is too much string bulk on the peg this can be a problem. Also, as pegs and holes wear the pegs seat further into the hole and the wider part of the peg reduces the clearance between the peg and adjacent string. If you have no signs of these problems, I would leave them as is. Cutting them off can also create a tendency for the string wrapping to become loose and unwind.
