Selling a
cello
Wondering if anyone on the board has successfully sold a cello
without the assistance of a violin shop? I have a modern Italian
(Mantovani, 1980) made in Cremona that has been appraised at
$22,000. I am not playing actively and want to sell the instrument.
The violin shops I've contacted in the Bay Area want between 20-30%
commission to sell the cello. I need to get at least $20K out of it,
and am wondering just how I might go about selling the instrument on
my own. Any thoughts appreciated. MC

Re: Selling a
cello
It's not easy. I tried for about 2 - 3 years to sell a viola that I
was asking 3K for. I'd posted it on several internet sites, I
advertised it in Strings, I told every musician I knew at the time.
I finally ended up trading it in towards my current cello.
At one point I wrote a letter to Strings asking how you go
about this, and got a knowledgable reply that basically said "they
aren't liquid assetts." Unless dealing through a shop, which has FAR
more contacts than an individual person, you can't expect to sell it
anytime soon.

Re: Selling a

I've sold my cello through an auction. I used Tarisio b/c they had
the absolute lowest fees and were very nice to deal with. My selling
experience was hassle-free (no dealing with people or shops,
virtually no waiting time) and i even got more money than i asked
for.
