Re: Johannes
Schenck
Schenck is a fine, near-great composer. Very little heard though
because almost all his works are for gamba. Nymphs of the Rine is
probably his most famous work. He also has several sonatas for solo
gamba, some unaccompanied, some with basso continuo. In some
instances his phrasing is a bit obvious and square, but he was a
genius at writing beautifully sonorous gamba sounds. I first became
acquainted with his works before I took up gamba. I thought his D
minor solo sonata would work as a cello transcription. I still think
it would, but have never gotten around to making the transcription.
(I just play it on gamba.)
