Mendelssohn
Octet
Who else loves this piece? I heard a performance on the radio that
seemed like it must have been with Heiftetz and Piatigorsky. Does
anyone know if they recorded this?
What are some good
recordings of this? I have an old tape of Cleveland and Tokyo.

Re: Mendelssohn

What a funny coincidence... I thought about starting a new topic on
this... There are actually two reasons: I love this piece!!! And
I`m going to play the second mvt next week in an all-Mendelssohn
recital. YIPPIEHH! There`ll perform lots of pianists and singers
in this recital, so we decided to play something for strings only
and chose the Octet. In addition to it, we`ll play the Allegretto
from Fanny Mendelssohn-Hendels SQ (very energetic mvt) and I`m
really looking forward to perform the Variations concertantes op.
17. Wish me luck...

Re: Mendelssohn

Very definitely could have been Heifetz/Piatigorsky, as they
recorded the Mendelssohn plus a whole bunch more chamber music that
had been performed at the Pilgrimage Theater in the Hollywood Hills.
I don't remember all of the cast (I will have to go downstairs to
find it later), but I know Gabor Rejto is the other cellist, Israel
Baker is one of the other violinists, and I think Primrose is one of
the violists. Wonderful recording, as are most of the series.

I first heard the octet performed by Heiftetz and Piatigorsky in NY
many years ago and have loved it since.

Re: Mendelssohn

I have a recording of the Mendelssohn Octet (we are talking about
E-flat, right? i don't know if there are any others! ) The
violinists are Jaime Laredo, Alexander Schneider, Arnold Steinhardt
& John Dalley. The violists, Michael Tree & Samuel Rhodes.
Cellists, Leslie Parnas & David Soyer. I assume this is the
piece you're talking about. I love it! The recording I have is
rather obscure. My aunt gave it to me for my birthday It's called
Chamber Music Classics, a 2-disc set, with Mozart's String Quintet
in g, the Schubert Trout Quintet and Beethoven "Ghost" Trio.

Re: Mendelssohn

Yes, Heifetz and Piatigorsky definitely recorded Mendelssohn Octet.
The other performers include Primrose and Baker. Heifetz is dominant
in the recording, and that's not surprising. The performance is on
RCA (naturally), and it's one of my favorite, along with
Tokyo/Cleveland version

This is one of those pieces I fell I love with as a teenager when I
first heard it on records I checked out from the collection in the
Fort Wayne Public Library. (Omigosh -- over 25 years ago!)

Re: Mendelssohn

I appreciate all the affection for Heifetz, et al, in this work.
However, as stated in a post from well over a year ago (and Bob
agreed with me on this one!!!), my favorite recording of the work is
with the Janacek and Smetana Quartets on Westminster. Wish it'd
appear on CD for the "youngsters" to hear. (sigh)

Re: Mendelssohn

I remember that post. And I also have both recordings!! Will have
to give them a listen later. I can't recall whether I fell in the
Sanders camp on that one or the other side.
[later that same
day] No contest. The Smetana/Janacek is delightful! You can simply
hear more music, in my opinion. In the Heifetz recording it sounds
like everyone is so intense, trying too hard. S/J actually sounds
like a different piece of music! If I had a seal of approval, that's
where I'd put it.

Maybe someday I'll hear that version (S/J), but, being the
opinionated person I am, nothing will ever be like the Heifetz
version of that piece, at least to me.

Re: Mendelssohn

I didn't realize you hadn't heard it. Doesn't seem possible. Now
that I think back, the talk about Mendelssohn's genius was not as
apparent to me with the Heifetz recording. I liked the music and the
fact that he wrote it at such a young age was amazing. But after
hearing J/S, I feel I actually heard what Mendelssohn wrote. There
is more going on than I ever was able to hear with Heifetz. It's
clearer, cleaner, prettier -- a lovely piece that I think was hidden
somewhat with everyone trying to outplay Heifetz. I can't believe
I'm saying this. My ears are untrained, but they also haven't had
trombones blaring in them. I don't know, David... I agree with you
on the Feuermann CD!!!! Don't you know SOMEONE who can let you
listen to the "good" recording?

If David treats me right when we're "alone" in Paris, I might be
able to arrange for him to hear the recording. :>)

Re: Mendelssohn
Octet - Proper seating?
Does anyone know if there is a traditional seating or one indicated
in the score? There was a performance I saw with great aintiphonal
effects due to the seating.
