Maisky lost his
bow at Dworak...almost...
A couple of years ago they showed on German TV a life performance
of the Dworak concerto with Mischa Maisky. On a fast up-bow, he lost
his bow and it started to fly away. I have never seen such a quick
reaction, he made it to catch the bow, it looked a bit as if he
catched a fly. Now he had the bow in his fist, stick and hair, about
5-10 inches away from the frog. He continued playing with the
fist-bow-posture which sounded weak with sloppy string changes,
fortunately there was no spiccato around! After a
while, when there was a short break in the solo part, he went back
to normal bow posture. What can we learn from that? 1.) Always have
a second bow under your chair 2.) The bow posture does influence the
quality of the tone!
Though there are many repetitions of classical music, they
have never replayed that concert - it is a pity that I haven't
videotaped it. I think after the concert Mischa insisted on the
original video tape being deleted in his presence.

Uh.... Where are you Christopher Chan?
This moment has been
immortalized in history on video tape, apparently.

While he may have insisted the tape be deleted in his presence, one
got away, since I have it. Attendees at the World Cello Congress III
got to see it.

The video of that particular performance can be found on a series
of Pioneer Classics laserdiscs entitled Dvorak Festival Concert no.
5. with the Prague symphony orchestra under the conductor Libor
Pesek. It's coupled with Symphony no. 9. You can usually find it
sold on ebay for about $10 +shipping.
I don't think it was
too bad on his part, he messed up during the quasi cadenza passage
of the second movement and you can basically do whatever you want
there. If you didn't see the video and only heard the recording you
wouldn't really be able to tell he flubbed.
