Alright - that
does it!
Boy, I was on your side for awhile, Rebecca, but dissing Mahler -
that goes beyond the bounds! I guess it's one of those things you
shouldn't judge until you sit in the middle of an orchestra and play
his music - it's an experience not to be missed!

The Greatest
First Symphony ever written by any composer...
I think so, even compared with Brahms. What thinkest thou?

Re: He's

Is that referring to Mahler, or to someone on cello chat?

Re: He's

I wouldn't say so, not that it matters , but his
music is fantastic, awe-inspiring, sublime..... not to mention ....
never mind- my dictionary seems closed for the evening....
of course there have been those who agree with you: (RD
Darrell, Down Beat, Chicago, June 4 1952)
If you are perverse
enough to endure over an hour of masochistic aural flagellation,
here's your chance! This grandiose Mahler Symphony of a Thousand,
with all it's elephantine forces, fatuous mysticism and screaming
hysteria, adds up to a sublimely ridiculous minus-zero.

Sorry
I guess you're right I'm not qualified to have an opinion on a
composer unless I've played his music; I just don't like to listen
to him.

Re: Sorry
That's silly. It's ok to have opinions about music, whether you've
played it or not.
It's considered good etiquette to refrain
from voicing negative opinions unless they are being solicited. And
having good reasons for ones negative opinions is usually called
for. "Just don't like to listen" to Mahler doesn't count as a good
reason - what don't you like in particular? Many things are acquired
tastes - I read a study once that stated it takes on the average 8
exposures to something you don't like before you can form a decent
opinion about it. For example - many people don't like sushi, but
most who don't like it have never had it, or only had it once. Most
people who have had it 8 times tend to learn to like it, as it's
pretty good stuff actually, and if they still don't like it, at
least they know why. Perhaps Mahler's music is similar to sushi for
you.
Give the 4th symphony a good listen - if you approach
it positively, you might find a lot that you like.

Yes you are
sorry
Dear impetuous, spontaneous RebeccaCello,
"Hideous" is a
pretty strong word to use against anyone dear. If you don't like the
music, then say so. No problems here with strong
opinions.
You often get into scrapes here by not being clear,
and for someone who has acheived what you have, after only two years
on the cello, I am surprised that you have trouble expressing
yourself. I hope it's not the same when you play.
Give a
listen to Ha Na Chang's rendition of "Silent Woods"; that's Dvorak,
if you didn't already know. I think it's right up your alley, as she
is a cello prodigy 20 years old I think, having reached the cusp of
cello stardom so young. This will appeal to you fascination with
quick-study musical genius.
By the way, I read an article in
a London tabloid about a fetus that has mastered the "Rococo
Variations"; is it true? What will they think of next?
with
only the deepest, caring love,
BettyLou

Re: Mahler's
141st Birthday TODAY!
Has anyone seen "Bride of the Wind" yet. Its a film ostensibly
about Alma and Gustav ( and Gustav Klimt and Walter Gropius too I am
guessing based on the title) but I am wondering if anyone has seen
it yet and can comment on it? I too adore Mahler (Yes, it is the
greatest 1st symphony by a composer in my humble opinion, no,
offense to Brahms, Berlioz or Shostakovich ). Not that it was really
appreciated during his time. Anyway, my understanding is that "Bride
of the Wind" is a new feature film about Alma Mahler so I worry
about their depiction of Gustav M, but being the Mahler-ophile that
I am I am sure that I will have to see this film no matter what its
angle is. To Rebecca, I urge you to give Mahler another try? What
other composers do you like? My suggestion is to try the adagietto
from the 5th symphony It is, I think, my favorite piece of music
ever. After listening to it a few hundred times it can still bring
me to tears.
Thanks for letting me add my two cents to this.

Gorgeous when he
was 25,
or at least until he grew his beard.
Young lady, aka
RebeccaCello, listen to any Mahler Symphony, properly, and you will
be so moved as to feel transported and slightly sick with
emotion.
I would advise that you started with maybe the 2nd
Mvt of the 2nd Symphony, or 1st Symphony, then follow it up with the
rest of the 2nd Symphony, then the rest of the First Symphony, then
the Adagio from the 10th Symphony, then the Third Symphony. Then, if
you have any sense, you'll be addicted, and the greatest moment of
rapture in your life will be playing the opening of the 2nd
Symphony.

Maybe
Maybe I'll give him a try. I love Beethoven, Mozart, Dvorak and
Schumann (I've just started doing the adagio and allegro). P.S.
I saw some film a few years ago which I think was based upon Mahler,
any ideas what it was called?

film around
Mahler's life
Could it have been Visconti's "Death in Venice"
?
Throughtout the film, the haunting Adagietto from the
Fifth Symphony provides the backdrop.
Twas after this that I
became a Mahler believer too..
Also in "Year of living
Dangerously" there is an amazing scene to the sounds of one of
Mahler's "Songs of the Wayfarer".
try them
cheers Dimitri

Bride of the
Wind
I saw Roger Ebert & whatshisface review this a couple of weeks
ago...I believe they both gave it thumbs down. The major gripe I
remember them having was with the actors' performances; they said
the woman who played Alma was so wooden & boring that neither of
them could really believe that all these amazingly creative men
would give her the time of day, let alone obsess over her. I'm still
somewhat interested in seeing it, but will undoubtedly wait until
it's out on video.
