Fingers, a
strange question...
I know this is a strange question, but please answer. A coulpe
of days ago I 'compared' hands and fingers with a friend of mine. To
my surprie his ring finger was longer than his forefinger. In my
case, my forefinger was shorter than my ring finger.
When I
came home I asked my brother and my mother. My brother had the same
finger construction as me and my mother had the same finger
construction as my friend.
Asking what constuctoin is the
right one is a bit stupid, but what's the most usual/common and what
does one's finger constructoin has to say when it comes to playing
the cello? I know Jacqueline du Pre had some problems because two (I
guess the forefinger and the ring finger) of her fingers had almost
the same lenght.
Anyone with some good answers????

Huh? Some
clarification needed??
From what you have described your friend's hand and yours are
constructed the same. Do you mean his ring finger was shorter than
his forefinger?

Your second
finger should be the longest...
On most people, the second finger (#2, playing a c on the a string)
is the longest of all. Of course we are all different, and some
people even have six fingers instead of five.

There is a strong statistical relationship between the gender and
the details you just described. At most male persons finger 2
(middle) is the longest, while most female persons have 1, 2 and 3
of the same length or even 1 is the longest.

A column appeared in today's LA Times on the topic. Here is
probably more than you want to
know: http://www.latimes.com/news/opinion/20010707/t000056104.html

To Cellobass and
Tom
Cellobass, Is it true that most women have #s 1, 2, & 3
fingers roughly the same length? That seems impossible. My 2 finger
(not counting my thumb as Tom's article did which made this so
complicated...) is significantly longer than it's neighbors. Index
and Ring are the same but Tall Man is just that.
I just took
a look at my daughter's hands, she's 8, hers are like mine. Gene
pool, yeah I know.
Tom, Wha? You just happen to have a
link to an article like this in your back pocket waiting for this
moment on CelloChat?!
You're good.

My middle finger is longer than the others, too. My ring finger is
about half a joint longer than my index finger (good and bad in
thumb position). I don't think I've ever seen anyone who has all the
fingers the same length or nearly so.

Re: To Cellobass

Mine are like Laura describes... although, I notice that the index
and ring fingers of my left hand (especially ring finger) seem to be
slightly longer, in comparison with the middle finger than those on
the right hand. Hmmm... wonder what that means.
And, Tom -
not only that article in your back pocket, but the Times, even!

Fingers
My ring finger is longer than my forefinger. Just to add in a
little bit more. I have noticed that my thumbs are very odd compared
to those of my friends. It's shorter comparatively, and sticks out
further, instead of staying close to the hand. It's hard to
describe. I claim that it's due to years of piano playing.

By the way, I met a girl at church camp who is
missing the middle knuckle on all of her fingers and only has 8
toes! She said it's genetic.

Re: To Cellobass

My hands are dissimilar. On the left one, my ring finger is longer
than my index finger; on the right, the index finger is just a tad
longer. Middle finger is the longest finger on both hands. Vive la
difference!

Re: To Cellobass

It's a pretty big pocket. (Well actually the Times is delivered
every morning.)
And on the subject of fingers, one of the
best violinists in Los Angeles was born with only three fingers on
his right hand. Two, actually, a thumb and two fused fingers. An
early operation divided the fused fingers and he does just fine.

Finger length
and musical talent
Hi, I read in a newspaper article that the length of your ring
finger in relation to your index finger indicates your musical
talent! People whose ring finger is longer than their index finger
are supposed to be musical! I can't remember the basis of this claim
but the article was in The Mail which is basically a tabliod with
pretentions. It also claimed that people with elegant hands are more
artistic and sensitive! Personally I think it's a load of crap-my
ring fingers are longer than my index fingers and my hands are small
inelegant. Maybe we should do a survey and see how many of us fit
the bill (the lead violinist from one of the big orchestras was
featured and had chunky hands).

Length of
fingers
I was watching a TV programme last week. There was a section on
finger length on it. Apparently, if the forefinger is longer than
the ringfinger, it means your brain is more feminine. If the
ringfinger is longer than the forefinger, your brain is more
masculine. It's to do with how much male/female hormone you get
while in the womb. So, a male with a more feminine brain might be
less competitive, more in touch with his feminine side, sensitive
etc. And a female with a more masculine brain could turn out to
be a tomboy.
Weird, huh?

DuPre
Did I read somewhere that she had an abnormally long left index
finger? Or did I dream it. I dunno. Anyone know for sure?

Re: DuPre
Looking at pictures of her it seems that the three longest fingers
on her left hand were roughly all the same length (ie. really really
long). Do any cellists have small hands? Mine are really small (but
luckily quite flexible).
