Feature Films
with cellists, string quartets, in them
When I am not practicing cello some of my personal favorite
pastimes are watching movies and reading. For the moment I would
love to get a list rolling of feature films that have cellists, or
quartets, or are about composers or things having to do with
classical music. That way I would be able to combine several of my
loves. I'll ask for book recommendations later. I also find the
right movies can be inspirational to my practicing.
So far
the movies I can think of about music are: (I am thinking less
about documentaries than "feature films" but if you have great
documentaries that I should see I'd welcome those
too.)
Hilary and Jackie (Jacqueline duPre) Amadeus
(Mozart) Impromptu (Chopin & George Eliot) Spring Symphony
(Schuman) Immortal Beloved (Beethoven) Red Violin Mr.
Holland's Opus Both Fantasias I & II
Anyway folks,
any thoughts on this would be appreciated. Thanks

It 's not about cellists or quartets. . . but it's still good.
Story of the troubled childhood and life challenges of pianist David
Helfgott. A stunning performance by Geoffrey Rush, and an aural
feast for Rachmaninoff fans.
Oh, also Truly, Madly, Deeply.
British flick, I believe one of the lead characters is/was a
cellist. I rented it once and the sound quality was so poor I
couldn't stick with it. But I think that was a fluke. I've heard
other people rave about this. But I'm not sure how much actual music
is in this.

Try The
Hunger
This is a Tony Scott movie with Catherine Deneuve, David Bowie,
Susan Sarandon and a small role by Willem Dafoe.
It is a
vampire tale with some of the above characters playing Bach Suite 1
and the Schubert trio in E
flat.

I
fell in love with the Bach Suite and the cello after I saw this
movie.

Lovely sad film about a cello playing ghost...
As for a
book, try Vikram Seth "Unequal Music" beautiful book based arounda
quartet that I have read about 4 times

Re: Try Truly

Loved them both. You have great taste. I just finished Unequal
Music a few weeks ago. What a wonderfully written, insightful,
compelling, story. And Truly Madly Deeply is my favorite underated
film ever. I think the woman in it does one of best acting jobs I've
seen. Alan Rickman is always fun too. I think maybe I will rent it
again.

GREEN
CARD
theme of the movie is implied by the name, with French actor
Giapardieux (mangled spelling). Cute movie; music, no cello.

pardon my
french...
Tous les matins des mondes - or something like that is a fantastic
film about a gamba player with the most exquisite music in it. That
may not be the exact name because I speak no french. Don't be put
off by the subtitles- The music blew me away when I saw it, and it's
a beautiful art film.

Re: Feature

A film starring Ben Kingsley (I think) that I saw a number of years
ago, called "Death and the Maiden" was a beautiful little film, and
the Schubert string quartet of the same name has since become my
favourite string quartet. Benny

Tous les matins
des mondes, All the mornings of the World
My Texas teacher (Ken Ishi) referred this to me and I now own a
copy. Interestingly, Ken said that all or part of the music on
the sound track was played on a Cello.

Why musicians
have a tough time becoming famous
I was thinking (correctly it turns out) that Jordi Savall, a world
renowned gamba player did the music for Tous les ....
So I
did a Google search on the title. Not much happened on the French,
tried the English. Got a bunch of hits. Those that mention the music
at all say it was "beautiful" or "inspired" but not a hint of who
played, or even what they played.
A bio on Savall indicates
that he was indeed da man. I suppose he may know his way around a
cello also. (anybody who can play the 7-stringed lyra viol should be
able to play anything )

kolya!!
Ellen--I absolutely agree with you. I cannot get enough of Kolya.
Each time I watch it I cry, esp. when Kolya is in the bathtub trying
to call his grandmother using the drain thing!! That kid is the most
fabulous child actor I've ever seen. Not overly much cello, but it's
there...

Music of the
Heart
with Meryl Streep. I was surprised I liked it - I thought it would
be unbearably sappy.
Also: DUET FOR ONE (plot summary c/o
IMDb.com): Stephanie, a famous violin player married to a
composer becomes ill from multiple sclerosis. Her whole life goes
to pieces : her career ends abruptly and her husband betrays her
with another woman and her favourite pupil decides to leave for a
tour in the USA. Stephanie tries to take her life... I haven't
seen this, but a movie buff friend of mine says it's great
- great performance by Julie.
by the way, IMDb.com is a
great site to search for films

"The
Competition"
Has anyone seen the movie "The Competition" about two pianists,
starring Amy Irving and Richard Dryfuss ? I think it was released
back in the early-mid 80s. I have not seen it but am interested to
rent it. Any comments ? ?

Re: Feature

This is a stretch. Spinal Tap. There is a scene which makes fun of
the scene in the Led Zeppelin movie where the guitarist plays his
electric guitar with a violin bow. In this case the violin sits in a
stand. The guitarist drags his electric guitar accross the strings
of the violin making a sound akin to a car wreck. Then, with upmost
seriousness, the guitarist quickly turns a tuning peg on the violin.
Brilliant.

Julie
Andrews
(Sorry for butting in, Patricia!) I haven't actually seen it, but I
have a friend who's a big Sound of Music & Mary Poppins fan who
was quite disturbed to see Julie Andrews playing a serious adult
role. (Also I think she does some partial nudity, which really
messed up his singing governess mindset!)

Re: Feature

I love Truly Madly Deeply -- but the only film I have to add to the
list is more of a cellist's nightmare. One of the newer James Bond
films stars Olivia D'Abo (I think) as a cellist -- (at one point she
and James Bond sled down a mountain on top of her cello). I don't
remember if it actually shows her playing (before the trip downhill,
of course).

Re: On the
cellist in the James Bond movie
I remember which Bond film you are talking about. I don't remember
the name of it. I also can't remember if the cello was in its case
or not. If it was in its case I wonder what kind of case it
was?
On another note, someone told me that the Michelle
Pfieffer Harrison Ford movie "What Lies Beneath" Michelle plays a
cellist but since I haven't seen it I can't attest to it.
