Enigma
Variations
Does anyone have metronome markings for the Enigma Variations? I
have the tempo markings, but not the metronome markings and the
recording that I have (London) seems on the fast
side.
TIA

Re: Enigma
Variations
I don't know the metronome markings for the Enigma Variations.
There ARE indeed some treacherously fast passages for cellists. Who
conducts on your London recording? For me, the best perfomance ever
is the one by Toscanini/NBC. It is a truly spiritual as well as
virtuosic performance and there simply is no better reading of the
"Nimrod" variation than this one. I'll bet, however, that the tempi
in the faster variations are speedier in this Toscanini recording
than on your London one; a sobering thought to ANY cellist. (The NBC
could play this like no one else, tho, and Frank Miller's soli are
heart-wrenching.)

Re: Enigma
Variations
Laura,
I found these metronome markings in my Eulenburg
miniature score of the Enigma Variations.
Enigma:
cr=63 H.D.S-P.: dotted cr=72 R.B.T.: quaver=144 W.M.B.:
dotted minuim=72 R.P.A.: dotted cr=63 Ysobel:
minuim=48 Troyte: semibreve=76 W.N.: quaver=104 Nimrod:
cr=52 Dorabella: cr=80 G.R.S.: minuim=100 B.G.N.: cr=58
(However, I am not sure if that is the correct marking for the
entire variation.) Romanza: cr=76 Finale: minuim=84
I
hope this helps. I have three recordings of this work, they are: 1)
NAXOS, Bournemouth Symphony Orchestra (this orchestra does a lot of
Elgar recordings for NAXOS) with George Hurst. 2) Sony
Classical/Maestro, English Chamber Orchestra with Daniel Barenboim.
3) My favourite: EMI Classics/RedLine, London Philharmonic Orchestra
with Charles Mackerras.
Yes, I am a Elgar fan.
Tom.
