Am I missing
something?
Why is the Starker 3 LP set of the Bach Suites bidding over $42 on
eBay, and with over a day to go? Is this a collectors item, out of
print, something like that? Curiously, down the page, Casals' 3 LP
set is going for $4.99.
Recently, I have found some good
stuff on eBay: Eisenberg's "Cello Playing of Today," a mint
condition copy of Cowling's "Cello," and the Boelmann Cello Sonata.

Hate to deviate here, but... I'ld really like to buy stuff on ebay,
but I'm not sure if it's safe, sending out credit card details on
the internet.
What do you guys think?
Tom.

Safe to buy on
Ebay?
Is it safe to hand your credit card to the waiter at a restaurant?
It is just as safe to use it on EBay. Most people do OK, the
statistical few have problems. I got a nice BSR record changer there
for about $70 in mint condition, and I use it a lot.

The Cowling
Book
I was going to bid on the Cowling book, but then I saw that you
were the high bidder and so I didn't bid. You got it at a great
price! It is hard to find.

Starker Bach
Suites
I just bought the CD reissue of Starker's Bach Suites on eBay a
couple of weeks ago for $12.50.

Re: Am I missing

Dear Zambo, In my experience as a record collector, I can tell you
that there is a cult amongst the audiophile crowd for Mercury
records. I'm surprised that this set in particular has garnered as
much interest, price-wise, because it is not even the original
issue.
(I'll refrain from speculating that the audiophiles
prefer this set because "SEE?? I can turn the volume all the way up
and the neighbors still can't hear the cello playing!!" because that
wouldn't be nice.)

Re: Am I missing

Stucka is trying very hard to bait me, but to no avail; the fact
that his is the minority view of Starker's musicianship &
artistry, as the free market demonstrates, must rankle. Then again,
I recall a moment last year where his ears overcame his prejudice,
in a Chicago restaurant. I guess that was just a temporary moment of
clarity. Anyway, now I regret GIVING that LP set away, after buying
my CD version.

Re: Am I missing

I'd completely forgotten the restaurant incident. Bob. Sorry. His
6th did sound like the 6th of an artist!! My apologies.

Re: The Cowling
Book
Dear Terry,
You are kinder than I deserve! Thanks for your
consideration.
I'm using eBay to replace the books I've lost
by loaning things out to students.
Actually, I was pretty set
on winning that auction; you might not have gotten the book, just
made me pay more for it!* It was a steal. What was the price, $7.95?
And it's in great condition. The dust jacket is even in great shape.
I saw at Amazon.com that this book will be reissued in
paperback sometime soon.
*This happened with another auction
I was party to. I decided I was going to win the auction for Maurice
Eisenberg's "Cello Playing of Today." Apparently, so did someone
else. We were the only competitive bidders and the price went up
into the $30s! I should have emailed the other bidder and flipped a
virtual coin to see who would back off so the other could save a
buck.
Thanks again, Terry!

Re: Am I missing
something?
I ain't no audiophile, but I know what I like -- and I do think
that my Mercury LPs are well produced. And Starker's recorded
performances are amongst my favorites. The Bach set recordings I
have, in order of
preference:
Bylsma Starker Fournier Casals
Kirschbaum Rostropovich Ma Harrell
I like
Harrell's playing very much, in the right repertoire. In these
Suites -- omigosh!

I don't care who baits you as long as you poke your head in once in
a while. Good to see you. There was anticipation as soon as GMS
posted of what should be coming next. And then *poof* there it
was!
I vote to resurrect OyOy from wherever he is, though Bob
will do just fine.
Oh yeah...REALLY nasty to bait with the
old Bylsma fingerings on the envelope trick. You can tell I've been
watching "Get Smart" reruns...
