Chamber music
recordings
I'll admit my chamber music recording collection is less than
satisfactory, especially given how much of it isn't even standard
repertoire. So...
What chamber music recordings should every
aspiring cellist own? Oh, wait, let me clarify: What *readily
available* chamber music recordings should every aspiring cellist
own?

I don't even know why I'm answering this. One thing's for sure. If
I have it, it's readily available. As to whether every aspiring
cellist should have it, got me. I like what I like. Among my
favorites...
Schubert's Death and the Maiden, Dvorak and Schumann
Piano Quintets, Dvorak trios, Ravel and Debussy quartets which
usually are on the same CD I think. Beethoven Quartets... Brahms
quartets, trios, piano quartets.... Geez, I suddenly have this urge
to go listen to more music!!
Anxious to see what others
post. I imagine, as a result of this, I'll be adding to my own
limited collection (that I don't need a custom CD wall system
for)...

I really like the Tchaikovsky Quartets performed by the Borodin
Quartet and the Souvenir de Florence featuring Rostropovich and
Knushevitsky on the cello.. I have it on LP but don't know if they
ever made it to CD.

Funny you should ask - I'm just listening to a recording of
Heifetz, Rubinstein and Piatigorsky playing Mendelssohn D minor trio
- it's great. Also on the CD is Brahms trio Op.8 with same violin
and piano with Feureman. Excellent recording - also recommend Beaux
Arts trio doing Brahms trios. Beethoven String Quartets - for some
reason I don't have any CDs, only LPs (odd things, like Lenox
Quartet - whatever happened to Don McCall, anyhow?)- but they're a
must. Op. 131 is one of my favorites.

of course you must have the Schubert C Major
Quintet- many good recordings exist! One of mine is with the
Hollywood Quartet that also has Verklaerte Nacht. It's a great
historical recording- plus it's the only V.N. recording approved by
Schoenberg. (funny story there)
AND
The Brahms
Sextets!! They're swell.
Schubert Piano Trios...
umm...
music... yeah.. get music...
While on the
subject of chamber music > 4 players, get the Schubert Octet-
which is hideously long, but has some very nice parts in it. It's
impossible to play in tune though. Hmm. And the Dvorak String
Quintet (4tet+bass) is swell, I don't have a recording of that, now
that I think about it.
And the usual piano+strings stuff-
Dvorak, Brahms, Schumann, Mozart (Aaaanswer the te-le-phone)(sorry),
Shostakovich 5tet (swell), etc etc etc
Music is pretty cool,
now that I think about it...

yes yes yes, to all the brahms that's been mentioned, but
especially the trios and the 2 sextets. not to be overlooked is the
magnificent clarinet quintet (mozart wrote a good one,
too).
the kalichstein-laredo-robinson trio has a really nice
set of dvorak, mendelssohn, and brahms trios. not probably the
*absolute* best recording you'll find of each of these, but very
nicely played and in one convenient 3-CD set.
the piano trio
is one of my favorite instrumentations (a big reason why i took up
the cello recently). you also must have the ravel trio, shostakovich
trio #2, and the dvorak dumky (which is on the k-l-r album mentioned
above). the beethoven trios (there are many) are mostly
lovely.
let's see...what collection would be complete without
the 6 bartok string quartets? i am also particularly fond of the 2
prokofiev quartets, particularly the F major. i hope somebody also
mentioned the late beethoven quartets. the smetana quartet "from my
life" in e minor is also nice, and if you're feeling adventurous,
"black angels" by george crumb and the 6 bagatelles by anton
webern.
oh yes, and the beautiful beautiful villa-lobos
bachianas brasilieras #5, for soprano and 8 cellos.
wow,
we've come up with a lot of music. i'd start out with the brahms
sextets--they're good for your soul!

I think the Dvorak "American" quartet is a must! (I have several
recordings of that piece -- I especially enjoy the one by the Cavani
String Quartet, which I think is sold in the Shar
catalog.)
And don't forget about some of the stuff written
for larger ensembles! I think you can't go wrong with a good
recording of the Mendelssohn Octet. And Bachianas Brasileiras by
Villa-Lobos! Maybe it's not quite standard, but every cellist should
have recordings of numbers 1 & 5!
Oh, and if you don't
have the Grammy-award winning recording of the Emerson String
Quartet playing Shostakovich --- that's a cool one,
too.

Don't forget the Haydyn and the Shostakovitch are superb,
especially played by the Fitzwilliam 4tet.

Schumann MUST
HAVE!
Yes to everything above, and there's an amazing box set of Schumann
chamber music with Martha Argerich, Natalia Gutman, Maisky, ect. It
is truly one of my all time favourites (Gutman in the piano 4tet
slow movements is to me, true divinity)!

What everyone else has said, plus . . .
Faure piano
quartets - I love my CD w/Ax, Stern, Laredo, Ma.
And I always get
shivers up and down my spine whenever I listen to my CD of the
Borroeo SQ playing Shubert's quartet in G major Op. 161 D.887.

Try to get the Mendelssohn Octet with Heifetz and Piatigorsky, and
the Mozart Divertimento with Heifetz, Primrose and Feuermann.
Also, the old Guarneri quartet performances of the Beethoven
Quartets is wonderful (although I've been listening to one that I
used to adore back in the 60's and 70's, and now I find it a bit
"fussy")
The Emerson performance of the Debussy is great.
