Could it be a
Wolf-Tone?
I've had one of the Gliga cellos for about a year and am noticing
something that resembles a wolf tone but it isn;t exactly what other
people describe.
I always hear a distinct buzzing sound
whenever I play B flats on the upper two strings. I hear it on the B
flat right above the A harmonic on the A string, on the Bflat an
octave below that on the A string, and also the B flat in 4th
postion-2nd finger on the D string. I dont hear it on the lower
strings.
It's not that loud but noticeable enough to rob the
tone quality of the notes, and I only notice on B-flats, not B's or
A's or anywhere else.
Does anyone think it's a wolf, and if
so, should I put the eliminator on the G string, even though I only
have the problem onthe upper two strings?
Thanks in advance

Re: Could it be

Have run into some planing issues on Gliga fingerboards. Not just
Gliga, but that's what this post is about. That will give a buzzing
because there's not enough clearance on either sidewhen the note is
stopped. A small "bump" is all it takes. That's one of things I
mentioned to you when you first got your Gliga because I'd run into
it myself. E

Re: Buzz
It doesn't sound like a wolf at all to me. Rather, it sounds like
some sort of contact vibration somewhere in or on the cello or in
the room which kicks in when you play either of those two b-flats.
Get a friend to help you find out what it is. You play the note
constantly while your friend goes all around the cello touching
everything that could possibly be touched--seams, joints, tuners,
tail gut, the fret on the tailpiece, endpin, purfling, ff-hole
wings, all around the ribs, cracks, where the ends of the bass bar
are, saddle, nut, the other strings all up and down, peg
decorations, strings in the pegbox, the a & d strings between
the b-flat and the nut, buttons on your shirt, your music stand,
anything metal within 6 feet in the room, etc. Then report
back.
Good luck and have fun with the sleuthing
process.

Buzzing
I noticed when I was trying out bows, that one certain bow made my
cello buzz really REALLY loud when I played certain notes. I believe
it was the E first position on the C string. It was horrible!! If
you have another bow, you could try it to see if it helps the
problem. It probably won't, since I've never heard of that happening
to anyone else besides me. Maybe Ellen or someone else with
technical knowledge could give more detail about this.

Clarification
I am not an expert with years of experience on cello repairs. There
are many people who post here who are. I do happen to have a working
knowledge of a fair number of Gliga cellos, some of which have had a
fingerboard planing issue. That's all I was saying. It's a place to
look. E

Re:
Clarification
I also have a Gliga, and experienced severe buzzing around the 1st
& 2nd fingers on G & C strings. Although it went back to the
retailer/luthier twice for planing, it's still doing it, mainly when
there's a prolonged period of low humidity.
From reading a
previous posting, I'm now wondering whether it might be the nut
rather than the fingerboard.

Re: Perhaps this
is the root cause...
Ponticello,
last week I got my new Gliga cello. The
soundpost had fallen during transport, so I had to take it to the
luthier. It turned out to be too short, but that is a different
story. The luthier found also that the fingerboard had a planing
problem, it was wavy that you could feel it with your fingers, and
he found that the fingerboard had not been glued properly to the
neck. With the neck slightly pulled back you could see the light
coming through between neck and fingerboard. I could imagine that
this will cause strange rattling sounds, just as you have them on
your Gliga. I am not very impressed by the overall quality and I
hope it will sound according to the wood quality.
Regards,
Horst

Hello
Ponticello
So what did those three B-flat buzzes turn out to be? It's been a
week now and I'm getting really curious. Let us know what's going
on.
