brahms...
Hi all.
I'm getting ready to play the Brahms E-minor Sonata, 1st mvmt, with a friend at a masterclass. Since I've been trying to "perfect" it, I've been more critical about certain things......;)
Well, as you all know, there's a leedle spot after the repeat that tends to cause a little trouble sometimes :) . I'm talking about the weird chords after the key change to F-major (I think it's F, but I don't have the music in front of me. Correct me if I'm wrong...:) ). When you have to play the F on the A-string and cross the two middle strings and play the F on the C-string, while playing those miniature notes on the D- and G-strings (D-flat & F-major chords). I hope you all know where I'm talking about. I don't know the measure number, and it's a tad hard to explain...
So I was wondering what everyone here has done with those measures and how you all practiced them. I've heard them played quite a few different ways. I guess it'd kind of a dumb question, but I got curious when I was practicing tonight. Is there a trick to get them in tune? (always searching for the magical formula...)
It's probably the weirdest part of the whole sonata, but it sure is fun! :)

I would play them as written, with the grace-notes before the beat. As for bowing, you might try the first note on an up-bow and the last 3 notes on a down-bow.

The piano is carrying the ball here, the cello is just harmonic filler, so treat it as an ensemble part rather than a solo.

I play that as Dennis does - grace notes before beat, first note up-bow, other 3 notes down.

I helped myself with thinking the miniature notes as a kind of "upbeat" and putting a slight crescendo on them. So I solved the passage musically and didn't think about the technique while playing. The passage is not really difficult, just unusual!
Keep you head high and have fun!!!
