Damaged/repaired
bow value
I'm looking at a bow and it has a bit of damage. The damage is what
appears to be a piece of ebony that had splintered partially off the
frog and was then glued. It is barely noticeable, very small. The
splintered piece looks about .75" long and less than .5" wide; it at
the front of the frog just under the metal between the stick and
frog (forget the technical term).
The dealer is asking full
value for the bow and made no mention of this repaired damage when I
took the bow on approval. It's possible, I suppose, that he did not
know about it, but it still concerns me. There's no way I'd pay full
value for damaged goods, especially when in this case the bow would
probably not appreciate in value.
How does one figure the
devaluation of a damaged bow or instrument? What is standard
practice for dealers when they sell damaged bows/instruments? I had
thought that damage and repairs were generally mentioned up front.
Any insight would be appreciated.

Damaged/repaired
bow value
I'm not an expert on bows, values, or anything else like that, so
whatever I say should be taken with a grain of salt. I would think
that a lot depends on what kind of a bow it is, and what kind of
value you are talking about. The more valuable the bow is, the more
the condition would be a factor. If you're talking about a $500 bow,
it might be that the damage to the frog doesn't mean a lot. If you'e
talking about a $100,000 bow, then the damage would seem to me to be
very significant.
However, I do think the dealer should have
pointed it out to you.
I also think that damage to the stick
(like a crack all the way through that has been repaired) would be
much more significant then damage to the frog. Remember, I'm not
an expert, and you should speak to an expert about it. What kind
of bow is it? Good luck. David

Is this an expensive bow? If you can tell it has been damaged i
don't think it's a very good repair job. A bow will lose most of
it's value if the head breaks off, i'm not sure about the frog. I
have no doubt that any kind of damage would result in lower a bow's
value. From what you said the frog was made from ebony. If it was an
ivory or tortise shell that would probably be another story.
