Borodin Cello
Sonata
At least new to me:
Borodin wrote a Sonata for Cello and
Piano in B minor (1860) It's in 3 movements. A CD is available
and the sheet music is too but it looks like MUCHO
DINERO..
Does anyone know this piece?

Re: Borodin
Cello Sonata
I looked at this sonata in a music store once. I don't remember
details of the piece, but my impression was that it's a not-so-great
piece. I passed on buying it. Decided it wasn't even worth putting
in my library out of curiosity.

Re: Borodin
Cello Sonata
I have a CD of this sonata on the Marco Polo label (a sister label
to NAXOS...their higher priced recordings) Marco Polo 8.223172. The
cellist is Otto Kertesz Jr. and the pianist is Ilona Prunyi, both
Hungarian. The sonata has a very stormy, quasi contrapuntal, opening
allegro movement with a moderately difficult piano part. The opening
theme is based on one from Bach's unaccompnied Violin Sonata in G
Minor, BWV 1001, however the development is more romantic than
baroque. The second movement Pastorale: Andante dolce, is quite nice
with typical Borodin Russian melodies with a cadenza section for
solo cello that is enjoyable. The third movement Maestoso - Presto
returns to the Bach theme and finishes with a brilliant presto
movement in B Major. The sonata is about 21 minutes in length and
overall it is enjoyable, not the highest level, but good romantic
repertoire and worth hearing. The sonata was left unfinished by
Borodin and was completed in 1982 from extensive, surviving sketches
by a Russian named, Michael Goldstein. Goldstein claims copyright
and partial authorship of the sonata and that is probably why it is
so costly at this time. The CD would be the best way to give it a
listen. It also contains a piano quintet and a string (cello)
quintet by Borodin.

Re: Borodin
Cello Sonata
I assume there is only one. Borodin didn't finish it; at least, no
copy finished by him is available. It was finished by someone else
(I've forgotten the name.) I have a recording of it (along with
other pieces- I think it is called Borodin Chamber music or
soemthing like that) and have seen the sheet music, also, which must
be in our library.

Does it sound
like...
"Stranger in Paradise?" Nice tune for a cello sonata, I think.

Re: Borodin
Cello Sonata
Michael Goldstein, I found it available for sale but it's too
expensive to just buy. I think I'll get a CD first before I decide
on buying the parts. If I like the piece enough to want to learn it,
I'll invest the bucks in the music. Otherwise, there are other fish
to fry.

Borodin Cello
Sonata
I found a recording of this Sonata about a year ago, when I was
searching for oddball cello stuff on Amazon. The recording I got is
on a Koch International Classics label, and it comes with a cute
"Little Suite for Cello and Piano" by Ferruccio Busoni. The cellist
is Dorothy Lawson. I like the Borodin as a nice romantic piece, and
the Busoni is ok. I personally prefer Busoni's rendition of Bach's D
minor Chaconne for piano... DannyP
