The Beethoven
Cello Concerto
Tonight I heard Laszlo Varga play the Beethoven Concerto on his
5-string cello with the Topanga Symphony. (Not to be confused with
the Topanga Philharmonic.)
It works remarkably well. The
downsides -- a few leaping passages that can be reached on the
violin but must be jumped at on the cello -- were offset by some
beautiful lyric passages that I prefer on the cello. The main theme
of the first movement after the cadenza was exquisite.
He
plays on a 3/4 size cello. I forget the Italian maker's name. It
sounds good and the E string tone blends nicely to the A
string.
As an encore he played the Allemande of the 6th
Suite. Lovely playing on Varga's part and for me it confirmed my
opinion about the need of an E string to play the 6th Suite "right."

Re: The
Beethoven Cello Concerto
I've wondered this before: it seems that whenever a 5-string cello
is mentioned it often turns out to be three-quarter size. Whysthis?

Re: The

That's great, I wondered if any cellists had attempted the
Beethoven violin concerto (it's my faveourite violin concerto). Is
it possible to get a recording? Also, do you think Isserlis or
Rostropovich will start playing it?

Re: The
Beethoven Cello Concerto
In the June 2001 the Strad magazine there is an article about
William Harris Lee instruments and Laszlo Varga is mentioned in it.
Quote:
Laszlo Varga, former principal cellist with the New York
Philharmonic and cellist of the Borodin Trio, owns two Lee cellos.
One is by the Polish maker Stanley Kiernoziak; the other is a five
string violoncello piccolo made by Thahn Kim. "This is my favorite
instrument," he enthuses. "I have a three quarter size Castagneri
five string. Bill studied it and together with Mr. Kim made a 7/8
model. I call it my "committee" cello but it treally sounds. I
even used it to play my transcription of the Beethoven Violin
Concerto with orchestra"
