Beethoven triple recording suggestions?
I have a pretty good version from Serkin-Laredo-Parnas, the famous Richter-Oistrach-Rostropovich which has some surprisingly delicate and charming playing from Rostropovich but oddly dissapointing from the other two, and a really not very good Istomin-Stern-Rose.

Wondering what else I should listen to- any suggestions? TIA.

Gary & I agree that our favorite is the Hendl-Corigliano-Rose version, now available as part of Sony's "Bruno Walter Edition." Well, it's not my favorite overall (which is Beaux Arts/Haitink), but it's just about the best rendition of the cello part. I agree Rose's later effort is disappointing.

I bought the one with Mutter and Ma - can't remember the pianist. I ended up giving it away. The recording levels were such that one can't hear the soloists without turning up the volume to ear splitting levels for the tutti sections. I hate that! I do like the Rostro/Oistrah/Richter.

A must !!!
A must - and easy to find - recording is Barenboim, Perlmann and Ma with the Berliner Philarmoniker LIVE !
It's simply incredible.

I kind of liked the Ma-Mutter-Zeltser recording except for one thing, which Rose said too... you can't tell who the violinist and who the cellist is.

But at the time, I was going through my "Cellists should sound just as good as violinists" phase where the more a cellist could sound as agile and nimble as a really good violinist, the better.

Ma does some great technical playing but the sound really isn't that cello-like.

I agree with the assessments of the other recordings with Slava and Rose.

I've yet to hear the Live one with Ma.

Re: Beethoven triple recording suggestions?
I'm probably biased, but I don't like the lastest Ma version with Perlman and Barenboim. I find Ma's playing very "affected"...with non-vibrated phrases that are either in 'homage', perhaps, to "historically-informed" performance practice, or are the suggestion of a certain conductor who shall remain nameless; you know, the same conductor who insists that the first 2 measures of the Offertory of the Verdi Requiem be played on one L O N G and excrutiatingly painful up-bow.
