Oh,
yes, another "favorite recording" question
It's official, our summer festival
orchestra will be performing Beethoven's 9th this summer. I've never
had a chance to play this before and am really looking forward to
it.
But where is my recording? I know I have one, the
Berliner, I think, the CD cover is gold, but I can't find it. I may
have lent it to someone.
Assuming this recoding will not
surface anytime soon, it looks like I'm in the market for a new one.
So who do you all like for the 9th?

El
Cheapos are fun...
I like to get the $1.99 specials by
unknown orchestras. Sometimes they don't play as well as the big
guys, but its lots of fun!

Beethoven's 9th? I like Furtwangler
(1951) for its sprituality, Toscanini for passion, Szell for
precision and Mengelberg for wackiness.

Bruno
Walter???
Avoid the Barenbohm (sp?) recording
on telarc. The mixing is poor. I too like the Reiner, though I used
to love my Bruno Walter recording of the 9th with the Columbia
Symphony until I had to give up vinyl when my turntable died. Is
that recording even available on CD?

Solti
I don't remember how the recording
is, but the performances with Solti and this work were really
memorable, especially the last time, which was in (I think) 1996 in
London at the Proms. It was spectacular, and the audience response
at the end was not to be believed.

Re: Oh,

Why buy one when four will do? And
how could Amazon possibly be losing money? I spend tons there, and
they keep sucking me in with more from those recommnedation
lists.
The Walter/Columbia recording is available on CD for
about $10 from Amazon. I also ordered Szell (great orchestra,
slightly less than great singing), Mehta/NYP (great singing) and the
whole set of Beethoven Symphonies by Solti/CSO (simply
divine).
You guys sure are good at helping me spend
money!
