The Smithsonian received, in 1998, a donation of two Stradivari violins, one Stradivari viola, and a Stradivari cello, which are ornamented. These make up the "Axelrod Quartet," named for the donor Herbert Axelrod, and have an estimated value of $50 million. Axelrod donated an extra million to support performances of chamber music at the Smithsonian.
