My school didn't have a string program so I played alto sax for 6 years and grew to hate it. My daughter's school system has an unbelievably fantastic band program and vocal program, (state of the art keyboard lab, etc). No strings. She now wants to play cello (she's 6); we'll see how it goes. I'm in a multi-age orchestra so she can be a part of that. One of the young violinist in this orchestra is doing so well her parents are thinking of selling their house and moving to another town with a string program. Athletes' parents do it - I don't find it too far fetched. My husband teaches music in Newark and has some violin students - here it is, a broken down school system with violins. Go figure - he asked for new instruments this year and GOT THEM. Trouble is, he starts his instrumental students and they may go to one of 4 different middle schools. Two have excellent music teachers and the others are miserable. Tough. Seems like this message had something to do with that other thread...
