I had a somewhat similar experience.. I had been playing the cello for about 5 years too, never got serious about it until about a half year ago and now what's driving me crazy is that I don't think I'll ever be able to play as well as Rostropovich. It's literally driving me crazy. I'm having a hard time trying to keep myself sane.
I don't think there's any reason to get nervous about performing(so I can't help you with that, sorry)but if playing the cello is something you want to do as a profession in the future, you'll have to take the cello more seriously(but not TOO seriously or you'll end up becoming like ME), and definitely work harder.
Can I ask you how old you are? I'm 15, and became serious about the cello when I was 15 too.
